The Reverend - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The common abbreviations for "the Reverend" are "the Revd", "the Rev" and "the Rev'd".
Use of the prefix with the surname alone ("The Reverend Smith") is considered a solecism in traditional circles (although "The Reverend Father Smith" or "The Reverend Mister Smith" are correct though somewhat archaic uses).
Anglican usage is for priests and deacons to be styled "the Reverend" or "the Reverend Father", deans "the Very Reverend" ("the Very Revd"), abbots and bishops "the Right Reverend" ("the Rt Revd"), and archbishops and primates "the Most Reverend" ("the Most Revd").

 Wordwizard Clubhouse - reverend
While the word "reverend" only occurs once in the King James Bible (Psalm 111:9 - "..., holy and reverend is His name.") and that one time it does apply to God (or his name anyway), I don't think that means that "reverend" ever had any special reserved meaning especially for God.
REVEREND was used as an adjective in the early 15th century and referred to people worthy of deep respect because of rank, age, character, or because of their personal ability or great learning.
REVEREND used as a noun for a clergyman; a cleric or divine.

However, when past participle forms are used as adjectives, modification by a bare very, or by analogous adverbs such as quite, is acceptable: there can be no objection to phrases such as a very creased handkerchief, a very celebrated singer, or a very polished performance.
What is more, some participles allow treatment as adjectives in one sense but not another: one may speak of a very inflated reputation, for example, but not, ordinarily, of a very inflated balloon.
As a result, there is no sure way to tell which participles may be modified by a bare very—syntactic tests such as the use of the participle as an attributive adjective will themselves yield different judgments for different speakers—and writers must trust their ears.

Hogarth was born in the county of Westmorland, on the 15th of January, 1785, in the very same mansion, Dodding Green, which was priviledged also to be the scene of his happy death.
His parents were devout Catholics, who with their forefathers through ages of persecution had kept the faith, and who, like many of the small landholders in the county, had retained also the family possessions from times as remote as any of the noblest families in the land.
Robert Hogarth was one of the first, if not the very first, that was ordained priest at Ushaw, on May 4th, in the year 1809, after having been thoroughly trained in solid learning and sound piety by Eyre and Lingard, and other noble inheritors of the glories of Douay.

DON'T CALL ME REVEREND   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
So far as I am able to learn, the title "reverend" was never used in connection with a mere man for at least 1,400 years after all those elders were ordained in New Testament times.
According to the Oxford Universal Dictionary, the title of "reverend" was first applied to persons of age and character in 1449.
In 1485, the deans in the Catholic Church were given the title of "Very Reverend" and the bishops were called "Right Reverend." God's title was "Reverend," so in order for the deans and bishops to be more highly honored than God, they used "Very Reverend" for the deans and "Right Reverend" for the bishops.
