EMANEM 4021: LOL COXHILL & VERYAN WESTON
As well as being a fine soprano sax player, it has to be said he is one of the most distinctive characters in the English improv world, with a talent for comedy almost as great as his talent for music.
Veryan Weston is a very different musician, with a background in composition as well as improvisation, and his piano playing often reflects the influence of Messian as much as Cecil Taylor.
Where many of their contemporaries studiously avoid even fleeting references to established genres, the Coxhill/Weston duo at times veer into not-quite-jazz, submerged blues, and tipsy melodies, not surprising given Coxhill's history of involvement in jazz, progressive rock, and theatre.

Patricia Veryan was kidnapped by aliens, who substituted a clone with no writing talent who wrote this book.
All of Veryan's "usual" elements are included: plucky heroine, hero who is tremendously brave and honorable, a seemingly impossible mission, a cast of unusual characters (timid cousin, faux gypsy), and of course the obligatory favored animal/pet (Pixie).
I was a bit disconcerted at the end, however, to learn about Vance's surprising inheritance, as it seemed a bit too handy and contrived, and we were never told anything about the benefactor, as if his name was of no consequence to us.

ALL ABOUT ROMANCE (novels) reviews The Golden Chronicles Series by Patricia Veryan
One thing I absolutely love about Patricia Veryan's writing is that her characters are completely true to the period in which they live, without in any way being unsympathetic to the modern reader.
Quentin's motivations for acting in a strictly platonic fashion toward Penelope (for he is in love with her and has been for five years) are such that no modern man can imagine, but they are also understandable and moving.
He has to suffer dreadfully to gain the right to marry her and live happily-ever-after (some scenes never fail to make me cry), but once he does the reader is left with a happy certainty that his reformation is complete and that they will be truly blissful together.

I think that L&G, LD and SBF are the first three Veryan wrote because they are virtually identical to each other in essential areas and radically different in style from all of Veryan's other books.
Now Veryan does have other archetypes: dull men with the huge fantasy life, wild boys, adorable boys, etc. But the most powerful of Veryan's heroes are the vulnerable inside, crunchy outside guys that suffer from society's cruel misjudgements: August, Roly, Anthony, and Treve.
And these shellacked-over bowls of jello are exactly the kind of men that Veryan is playing with in her first three books.
