Cajkanovic's main ambition was to reconstruct such a world view, the pre Christian pagan Serbian religion and mythology as it was formed before Slavs came to the Balkans in the 7th century, and during the first centuries of their conversion to Christianity.
Cajkanovic did most of his work between the wars in Belgrade where he was a professor at the University and a member of the Serbian Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Cajkanovic's work is a very rich source for students of South Slavic folklore and oral literature, students of pre Christian Slavic mythology and religion, as well as students of comparative Indo European mythology.

 Religion in Eastern Europe
In his attempt to explain the origin of the custom of decorating icons in Serbian homes, Cajkanovic points out that icons were usually decorated with a towel.
Though Cajkanovic’s perspective of the relationship between the icon and the saint that it represents differs from the Serbian Orthodox Church’s interpretation of that relationship, his comment hints that laypersons may quite possibly have misinterpreted the meaning and purpose of the icon.

This is supposed to prove that the genuine foundations of ethnonational and militaristic designs lies in the deepest dimensions of the so-called soul of the people, the mystical, supra-historical realm where the living, dead, and not-yet-born members of the ethnicity are bound together.
In this sense politicians and publicists such as Radovan Karadzic or Dragos Kalajic are propagating today the "calling" of legendary heroes during the struggle, which Cajkanovic in his time called "klicanje predaka" (the calling of the ancestors).
The "genuine Slav sees himself as a link in the chain of tradition and a carrier of the entire tradition of ideas and deeds, duties and responsibilities of all the generations of his ancestors.

The song describes the situation in Bosnia during the Austrian occupation, when Serbs could not freely exhibit their national identity, but had to pretend that they were Croats in order not to be killed or sent to prison.
The singer, Veselin Grujic Vesa, insists on "Orthodox religion and the Cyrillic script" as the signs of national difference from the Croats.
Another singer, Baja Mali Knindza, sings that "ever since God created humans/always others come to judge us/always someone bothers the Serbs/that's why in Bosnia there's no peace" (Lukovic 30).

If you are interested in folklore, and slavic legends, this is a very good book about vampire myths.
