Vespro della Beata Vergine 1610 (Monteverdi) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vespro della Beata Vergine 1610 (Vespers for the Blessed Virgin, 1610), or simply the Vespers of 1610, as it is commonly called, is a musical composition by Claudio Monteverdi.
Monteverdi’s Marian Vespers of 1610, his first sacred work since his very first publication twenty-eight years prior, stands out for its assimilation of both old and new styles, although these contrasting styles cannot be exactly classified as prima pratica and seconda pratica, per se.
The Vespers were published in July of 1610, in combination with a six-voice mass that parodies a motet of Nicolas Gombert, In illo tempore loquante Jesu.

Vespro della Beata Vergine 1610 (Monteverdi)
Vespro della Beata Vergine 1610 (Vespers for the Blessed Virgin, 1610), or simply the Vespers of 1610, as it is commonly called, is a musical composition by Claudio Monteverdi built around several Biblical texts that are traditionally used as part of the liturgy for several Marian feasts in the Roman Catholic church.
The Vespers is a monumental work of music, calling for a choir large enough and skillfl enough to cover up to 10 vocal parts in some movements and split into separate choirs in others while accompanying seven different soloists during the course of the piece.
This allows the performers to tailor the music according to the available insturmental forces and the occassion of the performance (the particular feast day's liturgy would have included suggested antiphons that could be chanted before Monterverdi's psalm settings).

René Jacobs leads what by 1990s standards is a large-scale performance of Monteverdi's popular 1610 Vespers: not only does he use a chorus in the Psalms and Magnificat, but he has his instrumentalists double the vocal parts for much of the time as well.

Monteverdi, even if not the first to compose an opera, was certainly the master who fixed that genre, serving as the basis for all subsequent opera composers.
Monteverdi also modified the style of the madrigal to take into account this evolution, and served as a model for his contemporaries in this genre as well.
Monteverdi, represented in both styles, is again the master from whom all took inspiration.

Monteverdi made two different, though related, settings of the last and most substantial part of the Vespers, the Magnificat in twelve distinct sections: one for seven voices and orchestra, and one for six voices and continuo.
I agree that Gardiners Monteverdi choir is strong in his version and you have also Jacobs version on Harmonia Mundi, Savalls (not transposed down a fourth like SOME parts are done here on Magnificat -as suggested by Andrew Parrot- and most arrangements for this work are now and probably was by that times norm).

It is not known if this was intended as a complete set, or a loose collection of motets and psalms, together with some versicles, a hymn, and a wonderful Magnificat.Monteverdi's Vespers were his first sacred composition in decades, perhaps prompted by a desire to get a place at the papal court.
In the end, Monteverdi did not get a papal appointment, but did move from Mantua to Venice. This is a huge piece, requiring strong vocals and strong instrumentals.
This was in many ways a flight of fancy for Monteverdi, as he didn't seem to worry about the practical constraints of performance.Monteverdi is a bridge between the Renaissance and Baroque periods.

Monteverdi's Vespero was composed in 1610, and you can hear the early foreshadows of the baroque here.
While this may lead the listener to expect a recording that is Monty/Stokowski (a la Bach/Stokowski), in fact it is remarkably stylistic, if not HIP, and not at all like Stokowski's Bach transcriptions.

The Musical Offering - Claudio Monteverdi, Vespro della beata Vergine (1610)
Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 must be one of the most recorded of all early music works, as it is one of the most important.
A few unusual features of this performance are worth noting: it is performed at A-440 (modern pitch) and Parrott has carefully observed the clef-transpositions in the Magnificat, placing it a fourth lower than most other recordings, but in line with what Monteverdi intended.
Audiophiles should take note that this is an early digital effort, and though the sound is quite satisfying to most ears, it lacks the richness and roundness of more recent productions.

Monteverdi: Vespro della Beata Vergine 1610/Venetian Vespers
My personal belief is that Monteverdi, the first great opera composer, wrote these psalm settings over a period of time, and then put them together with the other movements to make a unified whole for publication.
The other recording I own of this work, Gardiner's first recording of it, has a much nicer flow because there is no chant.
For the price I guess if you need a budget version, then the Parrott is now competitive especially if you prefer your Monteverdi sung one to a part.

Having lived for years with only one recording of this musical masterpiece, Garrido's recording on K617, which fullfilled all my musical Monteverdi needs - the Gardiner, Picket and Parrott recordings I don't like that much - I thought it would be welcome to introduce an alternative version to myself...et voila!: Jacob's recording.
Parrott's and Junghanel's way might work well with Bach - Parrott's Mass in B for instance is quite wonderful - but in Monteverdi I like to hear a full-bodied tone and timbre, more passion and a rougher edge if possible.
Particularly good are the striking rhythmic variations on the words "Sancta Maria, ora pro nobis." I also enjoy the interpolated gregorian chants.
