Veurne was nice, and even the stop at the Auchan supermarket at Dunkirk had it's plus points.
Veurne was quite a nice place, and we enjoyed our two hour visit there - particularly because we didn't have the "drunken mob" shouting & ranting in our ears.
On returning to the bus in Veurne, we, like many of the other passengers on this trip, were appalled & shocked by the behaviour of the "drunken mob".
It is then 4 km to the edge of town of Veurne where you join a side street that parallels the canal.
The canal begins in Veurne at the Nieuwpoortsluis (a lock which is now left open, and is in fact on the Dunkerque canal).
If you are coming from the east on the canal from Plassendale, stay on the towpath on the north side of the canal for the 300 m past the Nieuwpoortbrug, and then cross the footbridge at the lock.
The impressive center of the town is the Grote Markt, one of the finest market squares in Belgium.
It is lined by several historic buildings in the characteristic west Flanders yellow brick.
Interaction of the elements of architectural decoration of Flemish Renaissance and the sober Spanish influence becomes clear and it is for this that Veurne is often called the "Spanish town".

Veurne (charming little medieval town and moated castle) 10 min.
Veurne is the capital of the fertile region of Veurne-Ambacht.
You realize why Veurne has always attracted artists when you walk in the park, with its "motte", a man-made hill, where once the citadel rose, and its rich St.-Walburga's Church, or in one of the old streets.
