Via Tiburtina ran from Rome to Tibur   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Via Tiburtina ran from Rome to Tibur, probably diverging to the left from the Via Praenestina a little outside the Porta Esquilina of the Servian Walls and running to Porta Tiburtina (Porta S. Lorenzo) in the Aurelian Walls.
Some topographers have proposed that the Via Tiburtina left the Servian Walls by Porta Viminalis and ran to the small postern gate called Porta Chiusa ("closed gate", because it was later walled shut) in the Aurelian Walls, just southeast of the Castra Praetoria.
The fact that the Porta Tiburtina is built around a monumental arch built by Augustus, which took three aqueducts (Marcia, Tepula, and Julia) over the road, argues that by his day this was also the more important road.

It is doubtful whether it ran farther than the eastern point of the territory of the Marsi at Cerfennia, to the N.E. of the Lacus Fucinus, before the time of Claudius.
He also constructed a road, the Via Claudia Nova, connecting the Via Salaria, which it left at Foruli (mod.
Civitatomassa, near Amiternum) with the Via Valeria near the modern Popoli.

It must have come into existence, as a track at any rate, during the establishment of the Latin League.
Though it afterwards became an important thoroughfare, the first portion of it always retained its original name, that of Via Valeria (see VALERIA, VIA) being applied only to the portion of the road beyond Tibur.

 Via Tiburtina
