We have heard so many statements that the university fees must not undermine the principle of equal access to education, either formally or informally, so if all sides continue to reinforce this message, the task now is to think how we can set up loan and grant schemes to assist students.
If there is a way of keeping university fees at a level which is genuinely affordable for young people, and if they are embedded in a well-functioning system of grants and loans, then in my view, the most important outcome should be this: we must exploit the allocation effect of these fees.
However, I believe that in the first instance, far from creating a situation in which the universities are awash with money, we must now find ways of ensuring that equality in education can genuinely be realised.
