Vibhuti - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vibhuti is the name for sacred ash used in religious worship in Hinduism, especially connected with Lord Shiva.
It calls to the good of ridding oneself of selfish and base worldly desires that wrap the self in Maya (illusion) just as Shiva burned the god of desire, Kama, to ashes when he attempted to break Shiva's focus on the Divine Truth.
Vibhuti or Vibhooti also refers to the paranormal powers that Sage Patanjali claims that one can develop by the practices described in his book on Yoga Sutras, part of body of Hindu philosophy.

Salagram kosha Chapter ONE   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The concept of ‘vibhuti’ of godhead is an important one in the philosophy of worship.
The expression ‘vibhuti’, which is as old as ‘’Rgveda (1, 8, 9 ‘evahita ibhutayah indram avate’ and 6, 21, 1 ‘raviv vibhutir iyate vachasa’) is used in the sense of might or power, as well as in the manifestations of Godhead in the tenth chapter of Bhagavad-gita.
Whatever is the vibhuti of the one godhead is to be regarded as identical with the godhead, and not as a part thereof or as a mere representation of some principal referring to the godhead.

When Vibhuti is worn on the forehead, it reminds us of Isvara and the forehead on which the bad thing has been written by Brahma gets the grace of God, and therefore the obstacles, miseries, sorrows and sufferings become less and do not affect us very much.

Originally, 'Vibhuti' was derived as the highly potent 'Bhasma' [ash] arising out of 'Homams' performed with a plethora of medicinal herbs and leaves.
For instance, smearing of "vibhuti" on the forehead after a bath in cold water would absorb the excess moisture in the head region and thus guard against sinus trouble.
Similarly, "Vibhuti" would be applied to other phlegm-prone areas such as the throat, chest, etc. Hence the practice of smearing 'Vibhuti' all over the body started off as a medicinal application, became a custom, and still later, became the identification mark for the Shaivites [followers of Shiva cult] of South India.

So, yes, Vibhuti Pada (Chapter III) although generally judged to be the least important and least useful of the four chapters (it could be skipped entirely without lessening the purport of the sutras); it is strongly suggested that the profundity of samyama and parinama alone may well make the chapter well worth studying.
