Vibraphone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The vibraphone, sometimes called the vibraharp or simply the vibes, is a musical instrument in the percussion family.
It is similar in appearance to the xylophone, although the vibraphone uses metal bars instead of the wooden bars on the xylophone.
The vibraphone was invented in the United States in 1921.

 Vibraphone
The vibraphone is a descendent of the African xylophone, of the marimba found in Guatemala and Mexico and of instruments of the gamelan
The vibraphone also has a sustain pedal like a piano that when depressed allows the notes to ring until the pedal is lifted again.
The vibraphone originally got its name because it has a motor that turns metal discs, called pulsators, located under the bars at the openings of the resonators or tubes.

 Extended Techniques for Vibraphone
Vibraphone bars possess not only the fundamental tone of a given pitch (that is, the "written" note of a bar), but also the partials, or harmonics of that note.
To bend a note on the vibraphone, one needs a "normal" vibraphone mallet (cord- or yarn-wrapped), and a hard mallet (with a mallet head made of hard rubber or plastic, or a very hard wrapped mallet head - although this technique is difficult to execute with a wrapped mallet).
A vibraphone bar may be manipulated with a string instrument bow (almost always a bass bow, whose size is better suited to this use than a 'cello, viola, or violin bow).

Solo Vibraphone - Myths and Misconceptions
Unaccompanied vibraphone performance is not only valuable in its own right, but even those players who have no wish to perform solo, will reap benefits when performing with a full rhythm section, if they take even a little bit of time to try solo playing (if only in the practice room).
Certainly, when it comes to the vibraphone, the use of four mallets opens up many textural possibilities not possible with only two, but it is not a prerequisite.
Obviously, the vibraphone doesn't have as many notes as a piano (88 on a piano, vs. 37 on a three-octave vibraphone), and unless someone develops a viable ten-mallet technique, pianists are always going to have more fingers available to them than a vibraphonist will have mallets.
