As Damone explained in 1987 at the Kennedy Center Honors tribute to Como: "I was the usher who ran the backstage elevator, spending two dollars a week for singing lessons.
Damone’s first legit recordings were made with Lehman Engel’s orchestra in New York for RCA, as part of a various-artists Rodgers and Hart songbook.

Damone moved on to Warner Brothers for a one-off album, You Were Only Fooling, in 1965; its title cut gave Damone a last hurrah on the singles charts.
Damone next moved on to RCA and made a few recordings in the late '60s, but by this time he was primarily a TV personality and frequent variety-show guest.

A Frank Sinatra copyist in the forties, Damone later extended his range to become one of the few remaining practitioners of the art of romantic ballad singing.
These last two records saw Damone attempt to sing in a more muscular fashion, but the record that established his star status marked a return to traditional balladry.
Despite his lack of hit singles and a brief period of bankruptcy in the early seventies, Damone remained a regular at Las Vegas nightclubs and continued recording, most successfully on RCA throughout the eighties.

On March 9, 1947, Vic Damone stepped up to the microphone at New York radio station WHN for his professional debut, a guest appearance on the Gloom Dodgers radio show hosted by Morey Amsterdam.
Damone hosted his own radio series, performed at the Paramount, as the singing star backed by Stan Kenton's orchestra, and began recording for Mercury Records.

A native New Yorker of Italian stock, Vic Damone began his vocal education at the age of 11 and when he turned 18, Damone secured employment as an usher at Broadway's famous Paramount Theatre which helped pay for vocal lessons and also offered him the chance to study a range of professionals at work.
In 1949 Damone scored his first chart topper with “You're Breaking My Heart”, another ballad with an Italian origin, and in 1950 he was invited by MGM to star in “Rich Young And Pretty“ opposite Jane Powell.
Throughout the 1950s Damone recordings charted regularly on both sides of the Atlantic and in 1957 he reached the number one slot in the United Kingdom with “On The Street Where You Live”.
