  Victorian Railways - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Victorian Railways grew to service all parts of the state, and became something of a political football with politicians demanding new lines to be built in places where traffic levels never justified it.
In 1974 Victorian Railways was rebranded as VicRail.
In 1983 VicRail was reconstituted as the State Transport Authority.

 Eastern Australia: Drought
The drought conditions and high winds caused duststorms and on one occasion a huge cloud of dust covered Melbourne in choking darkness, during the mid-afternoon of February 8, 1983 (see ID 6562).
VicRail (the State raiway system) declared losses of $50m due to shortfall in grain cartage alone.
In Melbourne, houses were damaged by cracking walls due to shrinking of soil foundations.

Comengs were never in VR livery, they wore the Vicrail livery.
VR stood for Victorian Railways, and it's colours were Blue and Gold.
Vicrail Orange - Rather similar to Met Green and Yellow.

vicrail, the met transit and the ptc are history look to the future not what trains were almost 25 years ago
Of course, they were quickly "patched" up and covered with a sheet of steel the next day or so, after I brought along my new A75...
You can also see the old VicRail sticker pattern on a lot of former M>Trains, I think that M>Train got most of the older Comeng sets.

This is a re-skin of James Brook's VR B74, updated before release to the 'modern' version (without the valances on either side above the fuel tanks.
The VicRail loco's and stock were to be painted in a Teacup livery (orange with silver stripes on it), and only one loco and a rake of BS cars were ever painted in this livery.
VicRail itself didnt last very long, only around 9 months, before being replaced with V/Line, which is now V/Line Pass and Freight Australia.

Australia Southern bought more than a dozen 422-class double ended flat front cab units from NSW Freightcorp in 2000, partly for use in construction of the Alice Springs to Darwin railway.
Great Northern went shopping with Australia Southern, VicRail and WestRail and bought GMs, T's, Y's and J's - the latter which are almost identical with the Victorian Y's.
West Coast Railways of Victoria bought a number of aging B-class and S-class from VicRail, and they have also restored a steamer which is in revenue service from time to time on their line to Warnambool out of Melbourne.

Conjunction This small con at the Diplomat in St Kilda, Melbourne in December 1989, had some wonderfully freaky giveaways in the con sample bag; I thought I'd taken a wrong turn, and ended up at the Easter Show (wrong season also).
There were clown masks, and slot together cardboard models of the new VicRail trains.
I took a bundle back to the University, so the engineering students had something to build when they visited the toy room.
