Once at Tinian the cargo was unloaded, she proceeded to Guam to disembark several men and was given orders to report to Vice Adm. Jesse Oldendorf for duty in the vicinity of Okinawa.
McVay was told to take a direct route and although he requested one, an escort was denied.

As escort carriers stood little chance against a battleship, Adm. Clifton Sprague directed the carriers of Taffy 3 to turn and flee eastward, hoping that bad visibility would reduce the accuracy of Japanese gunfire, and used his destroyers in to divert the Japanese battleships.

 WW2DB: Jesse Oldendorf
Jesse Bartlett Oldendorf graduated from the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1909 and then went on to serve on cruisers and destroyers.
Comment by Tom Black on 7 Jun 2006-04:32:24 AM Oldendorfs fame rests on the destruction of the Japanese Southern Force in the Surigao Strait during the battle of Leyte Gulf, where he crossed the T of the Japanese.
It is arguable that if he had adopted Oldendorfs attitude, Halsey with the cream of the US battleships could have achieved against Kurita, with the main Japanese battle fleet, a victory of similar proportions to Oldendorfs: but on a distinctly greater scale.

Under Adm. Raymond Spruance, we first attacked the Philippines in the late summer and early fall reaching ahead from the invasion of the Marianas by the Fifth fleet.
He was a welcome change from Adm. Harrill as Commander of Task Group Four under whom we had functioned with less than brilliance in the Marianas campaign, save for the performance of our fights in the "Turkey Shoot" and the several days around the Battle of the Philippine Sea.
Among the early salients of action was Oldendorf's harassment of two columns of enemy vessels as they merged coming up Surigao, culminating in his "crossing the T" on his adversaries as they broke into the lower reaches of Leyte Gulf.

Stanton effectively lays out this chain of errors, angrily contrasting the personal courage of sailors in the water who risked death to save others, while officers and sailors in the rear failed to exercise basic competence from the comfort and safety of their offices.
