Vicia faba - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vicia faba, the broad bean, fava bean, faba bean, horse bean, field bean or tic bean is a species of bean (Fabaceae) native to north Africa and southwest Asia, and extensively cultivated elsewhere.
It is a rigid, erect plant 0.5-1.7 m tall, with stout stems with a square cross-section.
Vicia faba has a diploid (2n) chromosome number of 12, meaning that each cell in the plant has 12 chromosomes (6 homologous pairs).

Vicia might almost be described as a universal religion, as at various times it may incorporate elements or work with deities from a broad spectrum of cultural traditions.
In Vicia, the three souls are sometimes referred to as Fetch, Talker, and God Self.[9] These three souls correspond in many ways to the three souls found in Huna.
Vicia students often explore their cultural roots and the magical lore of their personal heritages, as "a Witch's power is in their blood."[10] This is not a hard and fast rule, however.

Vicia faba (Broad Bean, Faba Bean, Horse Bean, Tic Bean)
Broad Bean was probably domesticated in the eastern Mediterranean region in the late Neolithic (about 6800- 4500 BC) but precise evidence is lacking and in addition we have no idea of the wild plant species from which it was derived.
All the species of Vicia discovered that are in the same group as Vicia faba (section Faba of the genus Vicia), have a diploid chromosome number (2n) of 14 whereas Vicia faba has 12 chromosomes and cannot be crossed with known wild species.
Numerous remains of Vicia faba suddently start appearing in archaeological excavations in the Mediterranean basin and central Europe dating to the 3rd millenium BC.

The toxicity of Vicia species and their utilisation as grain legumes (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab1.isi.jhu.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-04)
faba L., the utilisation of Vicia species as grain legumes is of minor global economic importance and mainly restricted to the Mediterranean region and South-West Asia, where the grain is used primarily as seed and in ruminant diets.
Farmers need to be made aware of the well documented biochemical distinctions between Vicia cultivars to prevent the accidental intoxication of their livestock with seeds containing high concentrations of canavanine or vicianine.
Adaptation to Vicia toxins a) through selection of a digestive flora capable of detoxification (in the case of ruminants) and b) through selection or modification of animal genotypes with improved biochemical tolerance or even resistance to toxicity.
