Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering, Ltd (VSEL) was a shipbuilding company based at Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria in northwest England that built warships and armaments.
In 1994 VSEL was subject to two takeover proposals, one from GEC and another from British Aerospace (BAe).
VSEL was willing to participate in a merger with a larger company to reduce its exposure to cycles in warship production, particularly following the "Options for Change" defence review following the end of the Cold War.

Vickers Sons and Maxim began work on a rigid airship for the British Admiralty in mid 1909 in a dock at Walney Island, Cumbria, sadly it disintegrated upon its second trip out of a floating hangar on the evening of 23 September 1911.
Vickers was a pioneer in producing airliners, early examples being converted from Vimy bombers, and went on to manufacture the piston-engined Vickers VC.1 Viking airliner and Varsity military crew trainer, the Viscount and Vanguard turboprop airliners, and the stylish though noisy VC-10 jet airliner, which remains in RAF service as an aerial refuelling tanker.

Human-centric Design   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Design engineers who want to ensure that their designs conform to approximations of human capability require sophisticated dV/Manikin human-modeling capabilities, based on a predetermined set of manikins (anthropometry for 5, 50, and 95 percentiles for both males and females) for posturing the manikin and generating reach envelopes and vision cones.
The engineering group believed that virtual prototyping was a logical stage between digital pre-assembly and the costly fabrication of a full-scale engine mock-up.
The use of manikins produces reach and visual envelopes that indicate the extent to which a maintenance engineer would be able to gain access to the key elements of the equipment and actually manipulate the necessary tools and objects.

Procuring Change: How Kockums was Selected for the Collins Class Submarine (Research Paper 4 2001-02)
Vickers was a long established naval engineering company that had built many classes of nuclear powered submarines for the Royal Navy (RN) before being rationalised into the conglomerate, British Shipbuilders.
Vickers had no experience of managing construction programs overseas but had established a subsidiary in Australia, which, as the manager of Vickers Cockatoo Island Dockyard, was responsible for the refit of the Oberons.
VSEL's price was reported as being high, and its delivery schedules as doubtful, given the problems it was then experiencing with the Type 2400 program for the RN.

Upholder/Victoria class submarine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The boats were originally built by Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering Ltd for the Royal Navy, but, due to the end of the cold-war, and scaling back of the programme, saw only brief service before being mothballed in favour of an all nuclear force.
They are essentially identical to modern nuclear submarines (with the distinctive nuclear shape and sonar-deflecting tiles) but run on diesel engines instead of nuclear reactors (which limits their range, but conversely makes them quieter and more manoeuvrable).
It is foreseen that with the maturity of fuel cell technology the ships will be converted over to that power system, which could allow them to operate at sea almost indefinitely without the problems, real and perceived, of nuclear power.

Steam & Engine of Australia - STEAM YACHT GONDOLA
The engine was a twin cylinder, “V” configuration, with 8 inch diameter cylinders with 12 inch stroke, positioned each side of the boiler and connected to a single crank on the main shaft.
In the 1930’s, in preparation for conversion to a houseboat, the boiler and engine were removed, the engine room becoming the galley and washhouse.
The current engine is quite similar to the original being a twin “V” double acting, single expansion with 7 inch diameter piston and 8 inch stroke, and again using slipping eccentrics for reverse.

 Women in Engineering
Asking people in general for their ideas of what engineers do, invariably the answer is "they fix cars and stuff don't they?" The perception then seems to be a masculine discipline with dirty, heavy work.
HJ : The reconstruction of engineering education needs to take place in order for individuals, women and men, to realise a future in which they have equal access to and opportunities to participate in their future world of technology.
There is no doubt that the number of women in engineering has increased during the last ten years, however this could be matched by an improved quality of experience during the next ten years.
