Info and facts on 'Vickers VC-10'
Vickers offered a version of the Type 1000 as the VC-7 (VC for Vickers Civil), carrying up to 120 passengers in two rows on either side of a central aisle.
However Vickers' work on their VC-7 put them in the lead, and after carefully considering the routes, they offered a redesign as the VC-10.
Only 57 were produced and the VC-10 is considered to be another failure of the British aerospace industry (additional info and facts about aerospace industry) to deliver aircraft that were interesting to any companies other than their national airline and allied operators.

 Airliners.net Articles: The Might-Have-Beens: Convair 880 and 990
Delta Air Lines was the first airline to take delivery of an 880, the airline’s first ship setting a transcontinental speed record on its San Diego-to-Miami delivery flight on February 10, 1960.
An added benefit of the pods was their easy adaptability as fuel tanks, and each pod was equipped with an aft fuel jettison nozzle for quick weight reduction in an emergency - which, combined with the earlier described features of the 990, made it an altogether oustanding jet.
These were added to reduce the effect of the drag-inducing shock wave that develops as a lifting surface (the wing) moves at speeds between Mach 0.8 and Mach 1.0, the speed of sound.

Vickers VC-10 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Vickers Armstrong had been working in-house in the early 1950s on a project known as Type 1000, essentially a civilian version of their Valiant V-bomber with enough range to cross the Atlantic.
Vickers then offered a slightly smaller version to BEA for their longer European routes like London-Athens, the VC-11.
Only 57 were produced and the VC-10 is considered to be another failure of the British aerospace industry to deliver aircraft that were interesting to many companies other than their national airline and allied operators.

Independent, The (London): Obituary: Sir George Edwards
Among them, a prototype Viking was the world's first jet-powered transport aeroplane; the Viscount the world's first turbine-powered transport aircraft to go into commercial airline service; the Valiant the first of the British V- bombers; and the VC 10 the foremost long-range jet transport of its era.
In all, 1,486 Vickers and BAC aircraft- from Vikings to One Elevens - were designed and built under Edwards's leadership (and several hundred remain in service) together with the collaboration Concordes, Jaguars and Tornados.
He was quickly pulling his full weight as a member of the formidable Vickers Armstrongs aircraft team at Weybridge under McLean's chairmanship, with Hew Kilner as managing director, Tom Gammon as works manager, and Barnes Wallis on special projects.
