The Viscount was born of a post World War II belief that the gas-turbine in one form or another was the power plant of the future.
When the Viscount was in full production, Vickers-Armstrongs won orders from some 60 customers worldwide, amounting to a return of £177 million for the 439 aircraft sold.
The Viscount saw service throughout the world on both passenger and freight services and although the majority had been withdrawn by the start of the 21st century, a few soldiered on.

  Vickers Viscount
The Viscount was a medium-range turboprop airliner introduced in 1953 by Vickers-Armstrongs, making it the first such aircraft to enter service in the world.
The resulting Vickers Type 630 design was completed at Brooklands by Chief Designer Rex Pierson and his staff in 1945, a thirty-two seat airliner powered by four Rolls-Royce Dart engines for an improved cruising speed of 275 mph (443 km/h).
Three years later the Viscount won all honours in the transport section of the 12,367 mile (19,903 km) air race from London to Christchurch, New Zealand.

Vickers Sons and Maxim began work on a rigid airship for the British Admiralty in mid 1909 in Cavendish Dock, Cumbria, sadly it disintegrated upon its second trip out of a floating hangar on the evening of 23 September, 1911.
Vickers was a pioneer in producing airliners, early examples being converted from Vimy bombers, and went on to manufacture the piston-engined Vickers VC.1 Viking airliner and Varsity military crew trainer, the Viscount and Vanguard turboprop airliners, and the stylish though noisy VC-10 jet airliner, which remains in RAF service as an aerial refuelling tanker.

On the other hand, there are practical limits to the velocity which a propeller can impart to its slipstream - the blade tips soon reach the speed of sound and then areodynamics are apt to go haywire - and so it in turn is unsuitable for very high-speed aircraft.
It was known that a propeller's economy might be combined with the smooth-running and compact simplicity of a turbojet, if the latter's turbine were made big enough not only to turn the compressor, but to harness the remaining jet energy for driving a propeller.

In the mid 1990s, most of the freight that passed through Coventry’s night-time freight hub was transported aboard vintage propliners, including Vickers Viscounts and at the time, the world’s last operational Vickers Vanguard.
The frenzied, nocturnal, propliner activities which took place from this humble, ramshackle rural location, were captured by aviation videographer Henry Tenby, during several visits in 1995 and 1996.
