Topic: Vickers Viscount 707

Vickers VC10 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
For this reason, the early 707 BOAC had ordered was unsuitable for MRE routes, notably between Karachi and Singapore, and could not lift a full load from high-altitude airports like Kano or Nairobi.
Vickers designer Sir George Edwards is said to have stated that this was the sole route he could have taken unless he was to reinvent the 707.
As allowed in its contracts with Vickers, in May 1961 BOAC amended its order to 15 Standard and 35 Super VC10s, with eight of the Supers having a new combi configuration with a large cargo door and stronger floor.

 Vickers - Publications - Vickers VC10 - Crowood
The Vickers VC10 was Britain's answer to the American jet age giants, the Boeing 707 and Douglas DC-8.
The VC10's payload, range and performance needs were far in excess of those of the 707 and DC-8, and its success in meeting those requirements was a tribute to the designers and the aeroplane itself.
Using much previously unseen archive material and interviews with former Vickers employees, he has gathered together a fascinating story, which is a fine tribute to a superb airliner.

 HistoryLink Essay:Boeing 707 Turbojet Airliner -- A Snapshot History
In 1958, Boeing’s first jet airliner, the 707, proved to be the vehicle that finally changed the commercial side of the ledger from red to fl ink.
The 707, based on the prototype Dash-80 (1954), was the first truly successful jet airliner in service that was built in large numbers (almost twice that of the runner up Douglas DC-8) and which returned a profit to its maker.
Vickers turboprop would prove to be the first successful turbine-engine airliner in service that was built in large numbers (444).

Austrian - Vickers Viscount 837 - Mega Wallpapers
The Viscount was a medium-range turboprop airliner introduced in 1953 by Vickers-Armstrongs, making it the first such aircraft to enter service in the world.
The resulting Vickers Type 630 design was completed at Brooklands by Chief Designer Rex Pierson and his staff in 1945, a thirty-two seat airliner powered by four Rolls-Royce Dart engines for an improved cruising speed of 275 mph (443 km/h).
Three years later the Viscount won all honours in the transport section of the 12,367 mile (19,903 km) air race from London to Christchurch, New Zealand.

In one enormous leap it had raised cruising speed almost 100% by comparison with the piston-engined Vickers Viking; it carried two or three times as many passengers (according to type) and offered increased range.
Both BEA and Trans-Canada Airlines were interested in a generally similar aircraft; compromise in design to satisfy the views of these two operators resulted in the low-wing configuration and 'double-bubble' fuselage to provide a large underfloor cargo hold beneath the main cabin.
But because of the normal development programme of a new civil airliner - coupled with delays caused by problems with the new power plant - it was not until 1 February 1961 and 1 March 1961 that these aircraft began regular service with Trans-Canada Airlines and BEA respectively.

Meanwhile, the Viscount had no such problems, some 444 were built and the type even met with success in the fiercely contested North American market..
The difference between the new turbine and previous piston engine was readily apparent and appreciated among passengers; the Viscount heralded a new standard of comfort and reliability in short- to medium-range air travel.

Other problems included the fact the 707 doesn’t comply with existing noise regulations, this made visiting foreign countries hard as special permission needed to be granted for the 707 to land as some airports.
