Victimology is a term first coined for a specialty within the field of criminology.
Since victimology originated from the study of crime, some would say that victimology is the study of crime (not victimization) from the perspective of the victim.
In addition, the debate about the scope and focus of victimology is evolving and is illustrated in the sharply contrasting topics of research that are found in a variety of victimology journals.

The Importance of Victimology in Criminal Profiling
The most important aspect of victimology in relation to profiling is the fact that it narrows the offender type tremendously.
In addition, victimology enables profilers to advise investigators as to which interrogation tactics to use when talking with the apprehended suspect.
Due to the victimology in the above example, it is most likely that apprehension of the offender will occur in less time than if there had not been victim analysis.

During the founding of victimology in the 1940s, victimologists such as Mendelson, Von Hentig, and Wolfgang tended to use textbook or dictionary definitions of victims as hapless dupes who instigated their own victimizations.
Victimology doesn't have any subfields within itself; in fact, there are few theories, and little or no schools of thought.
Some so-called victim's rights (such as denial of bail, anti-suppression of evidence, and victim-initiated appeals) clearly are anti-defendant and pro-prosecutor to the extent that they undermine cherished principles that an accused person is considered innocent until proven guilty, and that the burden of proof falls on the state.
