Violent Femmes - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gordon Gano (singer/guitarist), Brian Ritchie (bassist), and Victor DeLorenzo (percussionist) founded the group and were discovered (and subsequently forgotten) by James Honeyman-Scott (of The Pretenders) when the band was playing on a street corner in front of the Milwaukee venue that The Pretenders would be playing later that night.
The following year in the winter of 2002, Ritchie and Delorenzo were requested by Rhino records to repackage their debut 1983 album along with demos and live tracks to coincide with a 20th anniversary reissue.
DeLorenzo asked to rejoin for what was to be a farewell tour, thus reinstating the old lineup.

 Cosmik Debris' Victor DeLorenzo interview
Victor has learned to be an exceptional listener, and he's learned to take bits and pieces of what he hears and melt them into the ore with which he creates his music and develops his characters for the stage.
Victor: I think it stems from my father being a barber, and of course, being a barber, you'd better be able to talk to people because they're sitting there for a while as you're trimming their hair or shaving them, or what have you.
Victor: Yeah, sometimes you want to be crystal clear, and hopefully give the listener the experience that you feel as though you've transferred something that was in your mind to their mind, and other times you want to leave it more wide open.

Victor DeLorenzo was a previous member of the band and in fact in my earlier incarnation as a rock journalist I had written a review about them saying Victor was the best thing about it.
Victor was there, we were introduced, and we found out we had a lot of musical tastes in common, like Albert Ayler, John Coltrane, Sun Ra, etc. This was in the punk era when sullenness and negativity were the norm.
Anyway when Victor and I were playing with third parties in impromptu situations or if we were playing as a two piece we called ourselves "Violent Femmes".

DeLorenzo owns his own recording studio, which he says a vibrant group of musicians hang out at.
While DeLorenzo performs the lion's share of vocals, guitars, noisemakers and of course drums, he gave his little cult following of performers the opportunity to contribute to the project.
The thing is that for DeLorenzo to make his mark as a solo artist, he might need to nail down a sound that is uniquely his.

Far be it for DeLorenzo to compare himself to Brian Wilson, but he does identify with the Beach Boys legend and considers "Pancake Day" his own "Pet Sounds." In "Picture Her Blue," he even uses Wilson as a metaphor for self-doubt.
Like Wilson did with the Beach Boys, DeLorenzo needed to break away from the Femmes, a pioneer in alternative rock, because the group was stifling his creativity.
It was manager-lawyer Peter J. Strand who convinced DeLorenzo to test the label waters with "Pancake Day." Three songs into the demo tape, a stunned Howard Thompson of Almo Sounds called Strand, and when label heads Alpert and Jerry Moss (formerly known as A&M) also expressed interest, the wheels began to spin.

To fans who have followed the group for the last two decades, the Violent Femmes practically ceased to exist when Vic left the band, and rumors now swirl that the band's future is in a state of flux.
DeLorenzo, who still lives in Milwaukee and runs a recording studio from his family's first home on the East Side, may just be the luckiest member the original trio.
Victor's son is Mal, a high school senior, and he frequently collaborates with his dad.

Delorenzo is calm, articulate, the sort of gentleman who smoothly glides an unprepared journalist into a comfortable conversation.
