The HESS project: biographical information about Victor Hess
Victor Francis Hess, whose discovery of cosmic rays made him the co-recipient of the 1936 Nobel Prize in Physics, has in the course of more than fifty years made basic contributions to an understanding of radiation and its effects on the human body.
Victor Francis Hess was born to Vinzens and Sarafine (Grossbauer) Hess on June 24, 1883 at Waldstein Castle near Deutsch Feistritz, Styria, Austria, where his father was chief forester on the estate of Prince Oettingen-Wallerstein.
Hess returned to the University of Graz in 1923 and was made a full professor in 1925 and dean of the faculty in 1929.

 Hess, Victor Francis
Hess taught and conducted research at the universities of Vienna (1910-20), Graz (1920-31), and Innsbruck (1931-37).
In a series of balloon ascents in 1911-13, Hess found that the radiation increased rapidly with altitude, and suggested it had extraterrestrial origins.
Cosmic-ray research soon emerged as an important branch of physics and led to the discovery of several new fundamental particles--including the positron, discovered by Anderson in 1932--as well as advances in astrophysics and cosmology.

Francis of Assisi's ode to the visible universe and to God beyond it inspired Beach to write the 1928 Canticle in only five days.
Sones en la Giralda (1963), originally for harp and orchestra, was inspired by the ancient tower of Seville Cathedral, a time-hallowed meeting place for lovers which offers an opportunity for the musical depiction of amourous and nostalgic reminiscences.
For four vocal soloists and orchestra, the work is a 22-minute hymn of praise and jubilation set in majestic Romantic melodies but with the chromaticisms and shifting tonalities which demonstrate that the composer was aware of 20th century musical techniques.

 Arthur Hess oral history
Hess: If expansion had come quickly like Disability did, if it had spilled down below 65 and got to take over where private insurance was otherwise going to operate, a wrong call could have made the whole federal operation just a contracting outfit.
Hess: This is one of these cases, again, where you can say if it hadn't been for Disability, if it hadn't been for the incremental approach, you would have had a lot of trouble.
Hess: It came up first of all because the American Hospital Association was very effective in their lobbying.
