Viktor Korchnoi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Korchnoi and Anatoly Karpov, the newest young star of the Soviet chess school, tied for first in the 1973 Leningrad Interzonal.
During this game, Korchnoi got up from the board, walked over to the arbiter and, showing a surprising ignorance of the rules, asked whether he could legally castle king-side in the current position, in which a bishop was attacking his rook on h1.
Korchnoi had moved to the United States, and was matched to play the young Soviet Garry Kasparov who at the time was battling against the Soviet Chess Federation that was clearly in favour of Anatoly Karpov.

Amongst the notes to the three Karpov games, Korchnoi retells the tale of his being an unwanted challenger and a foreigner in his own country during the 1970s and implies that Karpov was little more than a well-schooled automaton to whom the massed ranks of Soviet grandmasterhood had to dictate their best theoretical ideas.

 Anniversary of Victor Korchnoi
Victor Korchnoi appeared in the Pioneers Palace of our city only some month earlier than me but was considered as a prominent figure.
The most amusing fact is that Korchnoi's interview which was criticized in the domestic press afterward was published word for word in a sketch by Y.Zerchaninov and A.Roshal in the magazine "Youth" and there were not any claims to authors nevertheless.
Korchnoi's attitude toward the city characterize a fact that he wished to celebrate his anniversary just at the native land.

But Korchnoi's view is in line with Dvoretsky's observation about very few games between strong players being characterized by one overall plan that endures for either player; rather, he talks about limited short-term plans that are constantly adjusted.
Korchnoi also talks about being guided in very complicated positions by intuition, something that does seem to be more true of him than many great players, although of course he could outcalculate any of us mere mortals when necessary.
On the other hand, a lot of what Korchnoi says is fascinating, and I think that the endgames he chooses (just look for the diagrams) are extremely interesting; perhaps some games were chosen on that account alone.

Korchnoi, 74, is unique in chess history: after a short lapse he is back again in the top hundred and continues to be able to summon up the explosive bellicosity which was his hallmark in his prime.
Certainly according to the numbers Korchnoi wasn't the favourite but he was, after all, the world number two for some time: and his play in the early rounds suggested that he might well repeat last year's success for in the first cycle he sped to 4/5, dropping draws only to Sasikiran and Almasi.
Korchnoi retained his slender lead for the next two rounds and still remained in front after losing in round 8 last Monday as White against Berkes: for, on a day when Black won every game, Almasi had been defeated by Sasikiran.
