Victoria County served as a transportation, military, and supply center during the war, since its major town was on a branch of the Cotton Road, which provided access to guns, ammunition, medicine, and supplies from Mexico in exchange for crops.
The Victoria Barge Canal was the outgrowth of the original Intracoastal Canal Association established locally in 1905; Congress did not authorize the construction of a barge canal, except for the dredging of the Guadalupe River, until 1945.
Victoria County was in the First Congressional District under the Republic of Texas and the Second District when Texas entered the Union; it is currently in District Fourteen.

VICTORIA - An anonymous donor has made possible the immediate awarding of as many as six scholarships for selected Victoria College graduates to transfer to Texas A&M University or the University of Texas at Austin through a program announced jointly last month by the two institutions' Victoria County alumni clubs.
The anonymous donor provided $9,000 for six $1,500 scholarships that could be awarded to Victoria College transfer students beginning with the 2001 spring semester, noted John Zacek, a spokesperson for the Victoria County A&M Club and a director and vice president of club programs for Texas A&M's Association of Former Students.
Plans call for The Victoria College Transfer Student Endowment Scholarship Fund to be expanded to $1 million, noted David McMahon, president of the Victoria County A&M Club, and Melba Coleman, president of the Victoria County Texas Exes.
