The Thames Embankment is a major feat of 19th century civil engineering in central London.
Designed by Sir Joseph Bazalgette, it incorporates the main low level interceptory sewer from west London, over which a wide road and riverside walkway were also constructed, as well as a retaining wall along the north side of the River Thames.
Beyond the Houses of Parliament, it is named Victoria Embankment as it stretches to Blackfriars Bridge; this stretch also incorporates a section of the London Underground network used by the District and Circle Lines, and several stretches of gardens and open space.

Route 109 was introduced in April 1951 as a tram replacement service running daily between Purley and Victoria Embankment via South Croydon, Croydon, West Croydon, Thornton Heath Pond, Norbury, Streatham, Brixton and Kennington, and then either via Elephant and Castle and Blackfriars, or via Westminster.
Over the years, the level of service to Victoria Embankment was reduced, and in 1966 the Sunday service was withdrawn apart from a few early morning journeys, which in 1970 became single-deck one-man operated.
In 1986 the route was revised to run from Croydon (Park Street) to the Victoria Embankment loop on Mondays to Fridays, or to terminate at Trafalgar Square via Westminster on Saturdays, and the following year the Monday to Friday service was rerouted to Trafalgar Square instead of Victoria Embankment.

Victorian Wages for Skilled and Unskilled Labor: The Example of Construction Workers on the Thames Embankment   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
For the first section of the Victoria Embankment, the MBW [Metropolitan Board of Works] specified that bricklayers, masons, carpenters, and smiths should be paid 6s.
If an engineer worked a ten-hour day (and not the eleven-and-a-half-hour day common among builders before the 1860 strikes) six days a week, with the usual lapses for illness or weather, he could earn about £110 per year, equalling the wages of a young civil engineering clerk of the white-collar variety.
Imagine the trials of a newly minted "clerk of the works" sent out by the MBW to supervise a sewer or Embankment construction site, when he encountered his unionized and experienced "engineer" counterpart, who not only knew more about the practice of construction than he did, but earned higher wages.
