Ka'iulani left for England after weeks of saying goodbye to all of her friends (and enemies) at many banquets and functions on May 10, 1889.
Ka'iulani and Annie (who was only supposed to accompany Ka'iulani to New York but decided to stay with her homesick half-sister) arrived in England on June 17, 1889.

Victoria Ka‘iulani, formally Victoria Kawekiu Lunalilo Kalaninuiahilapalapa Ka‘iulani Cleghorn (October 16, 1875—March 6, 1899), was heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Hawai‘i and held the title of crown princess.
Victoria Ka‘iulani was born in Honolulu to Princess Miriam K. Likelike, sister to the reigning monarch of Hawai‘i, King David Kalakāua.
Ka‘iulani became mistress of ‘Āinahau at the age of 12 upon the death of her mother.

Ka'iulani's mother was Miriam Kekâuluohi Likelike, daughter of High Chief Kapa'akea and the Chiefess Keohokalole, and the younger sister of David Kalâkaua, king of Hawai'i from 1874 to 1891, and Lili'uokalani, queen of Hawaii from 1891 to 1893.
Ka'iulani was 13, still saddened by the loss of her mother and also dreading her upcoming journey to England to study.

Born in 1875, Kaiulani as a teen-ager became good friends in Hawaii with Robert Louis Stevenson, inspiring the famed author to write a poem about her.
Kaiulani left for Europe in 1889 for royal training and returned to Hawaii eight years later.
In March 1899, reports are that Kaiulani was riding a horse on the Big Island when she got ill. She returned to Honolulu and died on March 6.

That the author constantly refers to her as "Victoria" (which her friends and family did not)seems like a denial of her Kanaka Maoli self in favor of her "white" self...a very troubling detail.
The recent Mutual Publishing paperback reprint of the classic Ka'iulani biography "Kaiulani, Crown Princess of Hawaii" by Nancy and Jean Francis Webb is a must-read for those interested in the REAL Princess, and the new young adult bio by Sharon Linnea is also a good intro to her life and times.

A brand new set of books was waiting to be cracked open, and the young students jumped eagerly at the chance to read them with their military visitors.
