New South Wales is Australia’s premier state in more ways than one: it’s not only the oldest of the five states, but it’s the most densely populated too.
Including Sydney, New South Wales covers an area about twice the size of Britain, with roughly a tenth of its population; not a very big state by antipodean standards, but its six and a quarter million residents constitute one-third of the country’s population.
To the south is the Australian Capital Territory where Canberra, the nation’s capital and a city struggling to shed its dull image, is the gateway to the Snowy Mountains.
