A legacy passed from the Victoria Turf Club was the annual “race that stops a nation”, the Melbourne Cup, which was first contested in 1861.
From its foundation in 1864 until 2001 the Victoria Racing Club was the responsible authority for the conduct of thoroughbred racing in the State of Victoria, Australia.
Much of the early success of the VRC is attributed to the administration of the first Secretary of the club, Robert C. Bagot and his successor Henry Byron Moore.

Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.
The course was originally leased to the Victoria Turf Club in 1848, which merged with the Victoria Jockey Club in 1864 to form the Victoria Racing Club.
In 1871 the Victoria Racing Club Act was passed, giving the VRC legal control over Flemington Racecourse.

Racing Victoria chief handicapper Jim Bowler, along with several trainers and breeders, proposed the race be shortened to 2,000 meters (about 1 1/4 miles) in order to lessen the strain on horses early in their three-year-old season.
The issue gained greater steam after Kempinsky, runner-up in last year’s Victoria Derby, suffered a severe leg injury during the race, an issue that prompted Fitzroy to consult with Dr. John McCaffery, Racing Victoria director of veterinary services.

At 1028 today, the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria received a report that the Hobart bound yacht Affrayed Knot had been dismasted 45 nautical miles (83  km) south of Phillip Island.  There were no injuries to the crew of 6.
The race record of 1 day 23 hours and 15 minutes was safe for another year with the elapsed time for the line honours boat of 2 days, 16 hours, 27 minutes and 10 seconds.
At the afternoon sked the surprise of the race was unfolding with the 47 foot Prowler sailing down the coast to be neck and neck with the Volvo 60 Indec Merit, having covered 175 miles in the 480 miles race.

Melbourne's first race meeting was held on March 6 and 7, 1838, less than three years after the first settlers arrived.
A succession of small clubs conducted the early race meetings at Flemington and it was The Victoria Turf Club which staged the first Melbourne Cup in 1861.
