Victoria Square is a public square located in the centre of Adelaide, the capital city of South Australia.
The fountain in the square is designed to represent the three rivers from which Adelaide receives its water—the Murray, the Torrens and the Onkaparinga.
Victoria Square is bordered by important public institutions, such as the Supreme Court of South Australia, the Adelaide Magistrate's court, the Federal Court of Australia, the Treasury and the Adelaide General Post Office.

The planned square in the centre of the town was supposed to be called Ridley Square after one of the Protestant martyrs, Bishop Nicholas Ridley, but in Edward Jollie's 1850 plan of central Christchurch it is clearly marked Cathedral Square.
In 1862 the block on the eastern side of the Square was kept for the cathedral, and the rest of the land was taken over by the Provincial Government.
Victoria Street cut through the square diagonally to connect with Colombo Street, and was not blocked off to create a real 'square' until the Parkroyal building and square redevelopment in 1988 -89.

Victoria Square, named after Queen Victoria, is the central one in King William St. The other squares in the city area are Hurtle, Whitmont, Hindmarsh (after the first Governor) and Light (named in his honour and where he is buried).
In the early days when the city was not much more than a shanty town, Victoria Square represented a massive tract of land in the centre of a group of huts.
Victoria Square is also the city terminus of the Adelaide to Glenelg tram and you can catch the tram near Queen Victoria's statue at the southern end.

The city is named in honor of the Mohawk Indian chief, Joseph Brant (Thayendanegea), who settled in the neighborhood after the American War of Independence, in which he had led the Six Nations (Iroquois) on the British side.
The amalgamated tribes of the Six Nations still make it their headquarters, and a monument to Brant has been erected in Victoria Square.

The statue was only moved a short distance from its permanent position onto a grassed area of Victoria Square to allow the restoration work to be undertaken.
The roadway through Victoria Square had to be closed off while a heavy haulage crane was brought in to lift the statue of Queen Victoria back into place.
The statue weighs a massive 4.6 tonnes and was first lifted from the grassed area of the square onto the roadway before being finally raised onto its pedestal.

Victoria Square has been a construction site since August 2001, and it is not always easy in the morning to find the bus stop for Cité Multimédia.
Another public square will be built near the Convention Centre, and the neighbouring sidewalks and streets will be widened to make it easier for people to walk to and from these activity centres.
According to its designers, the Victoria Square project will be completed in fall 2002, while construction to widen the sidewalks will continue until spring 2003.
