In 1972, it merged with the library of the Victoria University of Manchester to form the John Rylands University Library of Manchester.
Mrs Rylands always intended that everyone in Manchester and beyond should be able to appreciate the architectural glories of her memorial to her husband, and exhibition cases were installed to give the public the opportunity to view some of the Library’s treasures.
The library was finally opened to readers on January 1, 1900.In 1972, it merged with the library of the Victoria University of Manchester to form the John Rylands University Library of Manchester.

An Act to transfer to The University of Manchester all rights, properties, assets and obligations of The Victoria University of Manchester and University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology and to dissolve those bodies; to enact provisions with regard to The University of Manchester; and for other purposes.
