Proponents of information technology in education claim that it can contribute to great improvements in schooling yet the evidence of widespread gains is not clear.
Collins, et al (1989) in proposing their model of cognitive apprenticeship describe six teaching methods which are designed to help students acquire a set of cognitive and metacognitive strategies, to observe expert problem-solving and gain conscious control of their own problem-solving strategies and to develop autonomy as learners.
As may be expected with an artifact as many-sided as the computer it is employed in education in a wide variety of roles.

 UTDC | Victoria University of Wellington
The University Teaching Development Centre (UTDC) was established in 1973 as an autonomous academic unit with responsibility to the University Council through the Vice-Chancellor.
The initial funding for the Centre was provided by the McKenzie Education Foundation, which also provided much of the encouragement for establishing the Centre (then named the University Teaching and Research Centre).
The Centre remains independent of any faculty or group in the University and is responsible to the Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Academic) for its activities.

Reader in Russian at the University of Durham and a Fellow of the European Humanities Research Centre at the University of Oxford—has published widely on Russian music and literature—her most recent book is a biography of Chekhov based on the places with which he was associated.
Lecturer, writer and curator specialising in 20th century art—studied at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem before graduating in English Literature and History of Art from University College London and with an MA in Art History from the Courtauld—has lectured for the National Gallery, the Tate, Royal Academy, Courtauld, Sotheby’s and Birkbeck College.
Obtained his PhD at Sydney University and lectured there in Spanish and Catalan—has lived in Spain for many years and is currently Director of Studies at the Anglo-American Institute in Barcelona, teaching language analysis and logic—his interests and publications concern Spanish and English religious history—has led many tours in Spain.
