  Victorialand Music at Shop Ireland
The title should give it all away- Victorialand a region in Antartica, something that you should never be able to put into words but there are a million words for- not all of them in a language simply understood.
Victorialand is an initially difficult listen- certainly not as ecstatically instant as Treasure of Blue Bell Knoll.
Victorialand is one of the most ambient of Cocteau Twins' releases, alongside the follow-up 'The Moon & the Melodies' (released under the 'Budd-Fraser-Guthrie-Raymonde'-moniker)- it is blissedout more than chilled out, the latter term much more a lazy marketing tool for slightly mellow lift muzak.

Victorialand is a complex medley of angelic music that begs for repeated listens, and remains one of the Cocteau Twins' dazzling masterpieces.
Victorialand befriended me when I was in love with a gay man. I slept over at his house- on the couch- one night and he put on Victorialand just as I was dozing off.
Victorialand, apart from its sheer ability to capture moments and build upon a theme, is also dear to me because it reminds me of a movie I saw while vacationing in Monterrey about three private school girls lost in the Australian wilderness and the enigma of what happened to them (wish I knew the name...).

So: their fourth full-length release, their fourth line-up (counting the addition of Thomas on a part-time basis as a new lineup different from the Fraser/Guthrie lineup on Head Over Heels), and their fourth sound.
I know that Guthrie is capable of playing all the instruments on an album by himself (he did so on Head over Heels quite well), and yet here he is restrained.
And, incomplete or not, Victorialand is the most beautiful thing i have ever heard.

VICTORIALAND (1986) was the apex of this trend and easily their most ethereal, airy album.
VICTORIALAND features very little in the way of percussion on most tracks, instead concentrating on the interplay between Elizabeth Fraser`s vocals and Robin Guthrie`s elaborate, but unassuming, guitar effects.
VICTORIALAND and its predecessor, TREASURE, are consistently cited as the band`s best records by their fans.

 Antarctic Research - N.Y. - May 11, 1899
The vessel reported at Hobart Town last December, and in a letter mailed from a New Zealand port on its return early last month, Borchgrevink states that he had been safely landed on Antarctic continent, almost due south of Australia, with his staff and equipment, and so is, presumably, now engaged in active research.
But Dr. Cook in his meagre telegram from Montevideo, says that the party did not go to Victorialand, but explored the Weddell sea, which is southeastward of Cape Horn, and the inference is that after obtaining fresh supplies, it has resumed work in that quarter.
The despatch (sic) leaves no doubt as to the value of the discoveries thus far made, stating that new land with volcanos was found, which would almost indicate that the party pushed further south than Weddell in 1823, or Ross in 1843.

Victorialand really fails to do much for me; it was the first Cocteau Twins album I bought and didn't initially encourage me to buy more.
This gives a hint of the direction they took on Victorialand, but that album has a strong Twins influence.
really like this ep--it is far more acoustic-ish than their stuff usually is, sorta soothing a la victorialand.

Victorialand has been hailed as a classic by critics and fans alike, and although such terminology is thrown around all too often, this album is certainly more than worthy of such praise.
My futile descriptive attempts aside, I would say the personal highlight of this CD is "How to Bring a Blush to the Snow." Victorialand is worth buying for this song alone, although it is difficult for me to be selective when listening to such a coherent masterwork of utter beauty.
"Victorialand" is a great album to to pick for people who just started getting into the Cocteau Twins' music such as myself.

Perhaps 'Victorialand' is a big part of that reason.
Victorialand is probably my favourite Cocteau Twins record, its up there with Hillage's Rainbow Dome Musick, and anything by Brian Eno.
It doesn't capture the ambient feel as well as 'Victorialand, for instance, because that record didn't have this excess of layers or indistinct washes of instrumentation.

COCTEAU TWINS Garlands / Head Over Heels / Treasure / Victorialand
Formed in the aftermath of the punk implosion by Robin Guthrie and Will Heggie in Grangemouth, Scotland, and joined by Liz Fraser, who met the pair at a local disco where Guthrie had an occasional DJ spot, the Cocteau Twins rapidly became one of the most influential bands of the last two decades.
Fruit of Robin and Liz messing around in the studio, Victorialand sees the pair in unusual acoustic territories, developing some of the ambiences heard on Otterley and Aloysius from Treasure.
Often mistaken for a new age record, to the irritation of the band, Victorialand, named after a region of the Antarctic, is a fascinating collection of breezy and vaporous moments.

Victorialand CD With Raymonde taking a break to work on the second This Mortal Coil album, Fraser and Guthrie made up the Cocteaus for the first full-length follow-up to Treasure.
Rather than trying for a full-band approach, Fraser and Guthrie instead created a much more simply beautiful effort, with a relaxed air to it.
It's an unexpected but effective touch for this fine record.

There's not a misstep among the album's ten lovingly composed tracks: From the buoyant majesty of the introductory "Ivo" to the transcendent quality of the epic, gospelesque finale "Donimo," Treasure remains a diverse and timeless wonder.
With Raymonde sitting this one out, Fraser and Guthrie decided to construct an ambient environment with layers of acoustic guitars and serene, gossamer vocals (all tinged with copious amounts of echo and delay, of course).
The resulting nine-song, 32-minute album is soothing and spectral, like a stroll through delicate snowfall in Antarctica, for which the album is named.

Listen to the impossibly high registers Fraser reaches in "The Thinner the Air," or the reverb-drenched strums found on "Lazy Calm" and "Throughout the Dark Months of April and May," and you'll find a 4AD band reaching its creative apogee.
Sure, it's not close to accessible compared to their other work, but for a night alone (or with company), it's almost impossible to beat Victorialand.
Now, I understand that some might think this psychedelic freakout of an album belongs in the sunnier summer months, but I disagree.

Much of it was, of course, due to his technophilia - even when the music was deliberately stripped down (as on Victorialand), the guitars were still being run through gadgets which gave them extra volume and majesty.
Were it longer, I'd probably be forced to start pulling the songs apart from each other or, God forbid, just lack the strength to sit through all of it from beginning to end.
All based on a looping guitar melody, quite in Victorialand style, it is nevertheless fully within the Budd paradigm, as if Guthrie was taking one of Harold's own themes and applying it to the guitar.

Victorialand isn't quite as exciting or lush as some of the Cocteaus' other efforts, but it's beautiful, delicate, and quietly pretty all the same.
Despite a few tracks that seem to lack a bit of energy, the album makes a great atmospheric piece with a handful of upbeat and shimmering songs that impress without being overly showy.

Guthrie adds heavy reverb and overdubbed lines to create the Cocteaus' wash on such songs as "Throughout the Dark Months of April and May" and "Feet Like Fins," the latter again featuring Thomas, this time on tablas.

With their lineup firmly solidified, they issued The Spangle Maker, followed by the LP Treasure, their most mature and consistent work yet.
A burst of creativity followed, as the Twins issued three separate EPs -- Aikea-Guinea, Tiny Dynamine, and Echoes in a Shallow Bay -- in 1985, trailed a year later by the acoustic Victorialand album, the Love's Easy Tears EP and The Moon and the Melodies, a collaborative effort with minimalist composer Harold Budd.
With 1988's sophisticated Blue Bell Knoll, the trio signed an international contract with Capitol Records which greatly elevated their commercial visibility.
