The Australian Alps is a general term for the highest (A series of hills or mountains) mountain ranges in south-eastern (A nation occupying the whole of the Australian continent; aboriginal tribes are thought to have migrated from southeastern Asia 20,000 years ago; first Europeans were British convicts sent there as a penal colony) Australia.
These highlands divide the rivers and streams which flow eastwards into the (The largest ocean in the world) Pacific Ocean, from those rivers and streams which flow inland to the (An southeast Australian river; flows westward and then south into the Indian Ocean at Adelaide) Murray River system or internal catchments.
They contain large (A tract of land declared by the national government to be public property) national parks and Australia's only ski resorts, which represent virtually the only permanent settlements in the area.

Brett McNamara, program coordinator of the Australian Alps cooperative management program, hopes that, 'As many as 100 delegates from Australia, NZ and elsewhere will converge on the Victorian Alps in March next year to experience the best in walking track planning, design, construction and maintenance'.
