Early in September 1877, Victorio and perhaps three hundred followers, Warm Spring and Chiracahua alike, fled the reservation and began three years of intermittent depredation, mayhem and violence, the likes of which the Southwest had never seen.
Victorio wanted a return to Ojo Caliente, and for a brief time in 1878 he returned, only to flee again when informed he and his people were to be transferred to the Mescalero Agency.
Victorio and his followers paid a horrible price for their bid to escape the reservation system designed for them by the American government; a price, paradoxically, they had inflicted on hundreds of men, women, and children in New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico.

 Chief Victorio
Victorio, an Apache war chief, was probably born in the Black Range of New Mexico around 1825 and reared as a member of the Eastern Chiricahua Apaches, often referred to as the Warm Springs or MimbreƱo Apaches.
Apparently Victorio and his followers remained somewhat content and did little raiding until after April 20, 1877, when the government ordered him and his followers to be removed to the San Carlos Reservation in Arizona.
Victorio protested having to leave his half-ripe crops, but did as he was told.

Victorio Peak is a nondescript, craggy outcropping of rock barely five hundred feet tall.
It is nestled near the center of a dry desert lake known as the Hembrillo Basin in the desolate wastelands of northern Dona Ana County in the southern part of the state.
Since Victorio Peak is a barren, treeless pinnacle of rock and dirt, he scampered up the peak, searching for a rocky overhang large enough to scoot under.

 White Sands Missile Range
In 1979 Ova Noss stood on the side of Victorio Peak posing for photos when she told the group, "Like they say, 'there's gold inthem thar hills'." Ova Noss died later in 1979 but The Ova Noss Family Partnership is back on White Sands Missile Range seeking access to the legendary treasure.
For those of you unfamiliar with this story Victorio Peak is a small hill, about 400 feet high, in the Hembrillo Basin in the San Andres Mountains.
While Victorio Peak sits in the mountains very near the range's boundary it is part of the Yonder Area, an Air Force gunnery range.

The carbonate-hosted Pb-Zn replacement deposits in the Victorio district are epithermal deposits as evidenced by ore textures, ore controls, and correlations with similar carbonate-hosted replacement deposits in southwestern New Mexico, which are also believed to be epithermal.

It was common at that time to give important Indians 'Peace Medals', however, Victorio was given a 'Presentation Sword'.

After a lengthy but one-sided fight, Victorio and most of his followers were killed.
