Computer and video games - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The term "computer game" also includes games which display only text (and which can therefore theoretically be played on a teletypewriter) or which use other methods, such as sound or vibration, as their primary feedback device, but there are very few new games in these categories.
The popularity of computer and video games, as a whole, has been increasing steadily ever since the 1984-1987 drop-off caused by the video game crash of 1983, and the popularity appears to be continuing to increase.
Video games are made by developers, who used to do this as individuals or small teams in the 80's.

Game artist - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Game artists are responsible for all of the aspects of game development that call for visual art.
Game artists are often noted in role-playing games, collectible card games and computer and video games.
Today, the ability of personal computers, software (such as 3D modelers) and video game consoles is so great that the number of game artists can far outstrip the number of any other group of the game development team, such as programmers and testers.

Getting into the Video Game industry
Game development is no longer the kind of thing that you can just do in your bedroom with a few friends, it's a big money industry run by professional people who demand quality or the heat will rain down on you and you'll be lumped with a mass of debt.
In order to be a video game artist you have to have a good mix of traditional art skills and modern computer based art skills, the balance of which will depend on the eventual specialization you go for.
While some game developers are particular about their artist having a degree, most places are more concerned that you can demonstrate ability through a portfolio rather than a piece of paper, so a degree isn't needed if you have the talent.

 Game Artist
A good video game conceptual artist needs the classic "hand skills" of the traditional artist to generate high quality images quickly - images that will inspire the team and might even be used as temporary art in the game.
This part of game development is most similar to traditional film animation, and in fact, pre-rendered scenes may be outsourced to an animation company rather than produced by the game team itself.
In-game cutscenes are usually produced by the game team, and may be created during a cycle in the overall development of the game rather than by a specific person on the team.

attn: video game artist/animators - NSX Prime
In general, expect to trade your life to become a video game artist...especially a successful one.
Video game artists also face technical complications and limitations that other artists don't have to deal with...an animator wanting to work for Pixar rather than for a game studio might not care to deal with such tedious things.
And, from my experience, the better artists tend to be perfectionists...meaning that they'll work as hard as possible (late into the night, long into the weekend, etc.) to achieve a certain level of quality (Could this be the "attitude" that FuryNSX is talking about?).

There are many different kinds of game artists and many different ways for them to express their art in video games.
Though comparing the artistic style of any two of these games might be like comparing Marvel comics to a Monet, these game artists do have several things in common: a passion for their profession, a good sense of composition, and the knowhow to pull it all together for a video game.
At the very least, most of us can agree that games contain artistic elements; that there are special brands of artfulness and skill that video game artists use in their craft--arguably just as much skill and execution as any other artists in any other medium need to succeed.

I've received an increasing volume of email recently from aspiring artists or recent college graduates who wish to land a job making video games but have had little success getting attention with their demo reel or portfolio.
It is true that many artists can adapt their skills to make great game art, after all none of us popped out of the womb knowing how to manipulate polygons or paint textures.
Game developers want to hire people who want to make games, not people who want to make movies but will settle for games temporarily.
