Light gun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These early light gun games used small targets (usually moving) onto which a light-sensing tube was mounted; the player used a gun (usually a rifle) that emitted a beam of light when the trigger was pulled.
The video game light gun is typically modeled on a ballistic weapon (usually a pistol, but occasionally a shotgun, sniper rifle, or sub-machine gun) and is used for targeting objects on a video screen.
A positional gun is essentially an analog stick that records the position of the gun to determine where the gun is aiming.

The first light guns appeared in the 1930s, following the development of light-sensing (Electronic device consisting of a system of electrodes arranged in an evacuated glass or metal envelope) vacuum tubes.
The user of the light gun notices nothing, because the period in which the screen is blank is very short.

 Halfbakery: Real Light Gun
A light gun interacts with a video game console to give the impression that the player is actually shooting things in the video game.
It could be connected to a video game, or just set to impose a little dot onto the screen for a brief moment after each pulse from the laser.
Video game light guns are synchronized to the video signal, and "watch" the screen, which lets you aim at targets onscreen.

Howstuffworks "How does the light gun for a video game work?"
Lots of home video games and arcade games use some sort of gun as an input device.
The output of the photodiode and the switch are fed to the computer controlling the game.
If the photodiode senses darkness after one vertical retrace signal and then light after the next, the computer assumes that the gun is pointed at the target and scores a hit.

GUNCON 2 Shooting Action – the popular light gun is an essential piece of equipment in the player’s arsenal.
For example, if you were outnumbered in a closed space with a lot foes on the screen, in any other guncon game youd have to shoot them all down one by one, ducking like a madman and losing time but now, youd just select the nade launcher, aim, and clear the area of enemies.
The funny thing about these kind of games (so long as you're using a light gun) is that they improve your accuracy with firearms.

The game was poorly positioned, both from a branding perspective and from a game concept perspective.
Near the beginning of the game, you should show the player an example of how the hero is flawed, so that at the end of the game, he can see how the hero has been transformed.
With a weak premise, or no premise, a game leaves the player feeling the story is out of control, and that is the biggest lack I see in game stories--usually games don’t have a strong premise, a strong statement about life, or the way the world is, or the way the world should be.

But, it could also be the result of miss-calibration of the light pen with the refresh rate of the screen.
If the light gun doesn't have the correct timing information it can't really tell where it is pointing and the error will accumulate as you get toward the left edge of the screen.
