Videocipher - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
VideoCipher is a brand name of analog scrambling equipment for satellite television invented in 1983 by Linkabit systems, which was bought out by MA/COM in 1985.
Videocipher scrambling usually involves the DES encryption scheme.
This system was initially considered for use by HBO in the 1980's, but was rejected in favor of Videocipher II as it was determined that descramblers for home satellite viewers would be required, and the Videocipher I was determined to be too expensive for consumer use.

 Scrambled Signals
Though the industry was confident that the Videocipher II (VC-II) would reduce satellite programming "theft," the system was quickly plagued with problems.
Problems arose for Videocipher II when an enormous fl market developed for altered descramblers.
To correct this flaw (and to protect their near monopoly status), General Instrument released an updated version of the descrambler called Videocipher II Plus in late 1991.

SBE Chapter 24 - Madison, WI
VideoCipher was experienced at making high-end devices for military, but were not accustomed to making devices where they had to be concerned with cost as well as function.
The VideoCipher division of had to design a box that didn’t cost more than a few hundred dollars, yet was more secure than the industrial quality device VideoCipher I. VideoCipher realized that people would try to break their system to pirate HBO’s premium signal.
With VideoCipher’s chip, an authorizing signal would be sent from VideoCipher, up to HBO’s satellite, and then down to the subscriber’s box once the viewer had paid for their subscription.

Well, we have a number of questions about that but let's start off with what most of our listeners are familiar with and that would be the Videocipher.
Digicipher I was very much on the move, very fast paced being adopted by the marketplace and like you said I got a receiver that provided Digicipher I and Videocipher decoding.
I understand this is due in part to the fact that pirates have, a lot of them have started to give up with their boxes basically being rendered useless or just too much of a hassle to deal with calling the 900 numbers every other day.
