Videophone Booths for Deaf   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The new videophone booths, which will initially be available in leading schools and institutions, make communication between the deaf and hard-of-hearing community with the hearing world easier than ever.
The interpreter, who also uses a videophone and TV to sign to the deaf user, then contacts the hearing user via a standard telephone line and relays the conversation between the two parties.
Instead, they will be able to use the videophone booths to converse in their primary language, ASL, and to convey ideas and emotions to hearing individuals.

Videophone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A videophone is a telephone which is capable of both audio and video duplex transmission.

One example of a fictional videophone is the Picturephone from Pee-wee's Playhouse.

 BT Videophone 2000 Reviewed
The Videophone 2000 is a little more feature-packed than the Videophone 1000 - it has a basic built-in web browser, and can connect to the Internet wirelessly (via a wi-fi enabled hub such as the BT Home Hub).
The BT Videophone 2000 also supports web browsing, although this is pretty limited, due to the screen size and the navigation controls on the phone.
The Videophone 2000 from BT is well built, very easy to use, looks good on a desk, and integrates well into a home network.

The videophone has made the jump to reality.
Two new videophones on the market work like regular telephones, but you'll pay a price to be an early adopter of these devices.
And because the signals are sent over a broadband connection (you and the person you call will both need one), the video is mostly crisp and clear, although fast motion is a bit distorted.

 THE VIDEOPHONE AND SOCIETY
Since the videophone allows one to see whom they are speaking with, a deaf person can speak to another individual through sign language.
Although the videophone provides a lot of positive aspects to society, there are also negative areas on the invention.
Just like any other invention, the videophone needs time to develop and change so that it may become nothing but a friend to society and help all who are a part of it.

The videophone connects to your broadband cable or DSL modem, making it possible to send and receive video and sound to and from the same kind of videophone at 30 frames per second (by comparison, modern films are shown in theaters at 24 frames per second).
The unique videophone is designed vertically, so that it sits on a desktop at eye level to a caller seated in front of it.

Vonage Pushing Viseon Videophone to Subscribers - Gizmodo
Vonage is pushing their videophone service to their customers this morning, showing off this new all-in-one unit from Viseon.
The copy of the email I received doesn't have pricing information, but I can only hope that if Vonage is asking their customers to drop money on new hardware that the prices for the video calls themselves will be effectively the same as voice-only connections.
I still think the idea is nice but cumbersome, although if it is going to be adopted in any numbers to speak of it will have to be cheap, standardized, and easy—all qualities Vonage attributes to its new box.

 What is a Videophone?
A videophone is a form of remote communication which allows the user to transfer not only a voice signal, but also a visual video signal.
While true videophone technology is meant to run through high-speed lines and offer excellent frame rates, when the videophone first made its real introduction to the general public, it was limited to existing phone lines and their severely limited bandwidth.
In recent years, the cost of a videophone has gone down substantially, but it appears new technologies such as webcams may already be rendering the videophone obsolete.

New Videophone Hailed As Breakthrough For The Deaf - Forbes.com   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-10)
The Sorenson videophone is a breakthrough, said Genie Gertz, an assistant professor of deaf studies at California State University at Northridge, because it enables the deaf to use what many consider to be their native language American Sign Language with unprecedented simplicity and clarity.
By contrast, she said, the videophone enables her to express herself; equally important, it allows her to read the emotions of the interpreter acting on behalf of the other person.
With the videophone, Gertz can now grasp the facial expressions and body language of interpreters quickly and clearly enough that she can help them to understand her parents' accent.
