Method for extending cathode life in vidicon tubes - Patent 4018489
By heating as many of the electrodes as possible in a vidicon tube during and after the cathode activation, the potentiality for gas contamination of the electrodes is greatly reduced and the life of the tube is extended.
The cathode life in vidicon tubes may be extended by heating at least some of the electrodes in the vidicon during and after the cathode activation.
In this case, the heater 26 cannot be employed to heat all of the electrodes in the tube satisfactorily, since the heat from the electrodes close to the target might cause the seal to melt.

In vidicon tubes, the target automatically integrates the signal for 16.7 msec at standard scanning rates.
Refers to the standard, or sulfide, vidicon tube, rather than to a family of vidicon-type camera tubes.
Using antimony trisulfide as the photoconductive element in the target, the Vidicon has a relatively low sensitivity and high dark current, but high resolution, AGC compatibility, and low gamma.

As the SEC Vidicon face plate was opaque to UV light the front of the camera had a "proximity focussed" UV-to-visible converter (UVC) with a caesium telluride photocathode.
This usually had 5 kV across it to generate the blue photons for the SEC Vidicon.
The second part was the electrostatically focussed image section of the camera where the image was integrated.

In a vidicon tube system, a television camera is fitted with a vidicon tube, which is sensitive to infrared radiation.
Filters can be placed in front of the imaged area to remove the visible radiation in order to reduce the resolution of the vidicon tube system [9].
Also, as the tube causes thermal noise as it heats up, and the system can only be operated for periods of about an hour at a time [3].
