Vidna Obmana   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-17)
Dirk Serries chose the name Vidna Obmana for his musical persona because it is a Slavic term that translates as "optical illusion", a concept which correlates sonically with the surreal, alternate sound worlds depicted in his music.
Throughout his career, Vidna Obmana has explored the abrasive side of electronic composition, the freeform landscapes of the isolationist ambient aesthetic, the structured interactivity of Fourth World soundscapess, international music traditions and post-classical experimentations.
Vidna Obmana returned to Philadelphia for a concert with long-time friend and collaborator Steve Roach.

Vidna Obmana --- Official Relapse Records Band Page
Embracing the challenge to leap into unknown and uncharted terrain, VIDNA refines his minimalistic sound-sculpting while expanding the range of rhythms and performance on various acoustic instruments, like the fascinating Slovakian overtone flute Fujara, and combining his array of sounds with contemporary elements, slowly changing pace with a great interest in the avantgarde.
Recognized internationally for his solo and collaborative work, spanning over 34 albums, commissioned works for the Dutch National Radio, Zoo Antwerpen, a Japanese TV documentary, MTV and several Belgian video art productions, including his critically acclaimed releases, continuous productivity has paved the way for expanded visibility and recognition.
References to VIDNA's 'industrial' past of the early 80's remained strongly present, while the fusion of his ambient soundscapes with bolder and less spatial combinations of harmonics, dynamics and experimentation was even more accentuated.

In a somewhat semantic argument, Vidna Obmana and Tietchens claim that recycling -- rather than remixing or deconstructing -- isolates and emphasizes a piece's source material, which in turn is used to create an entirely new sound structure.

Belgian electronic composer Vidna Obmana has a new ten-song compilation out entitled Twilight of Perception, a historic representation of the creative avenues he traveled on between 1990 and 1995.

Obmana's continuous, streaming cloudscape of music, enter the listener like ether, suspend gravity and time, and carry the listener into a dreamlike state.
The list of instruments utilized by Obmana in creating his music may give an idea of the general sound, although the way the individual instruments are weaved into the greater harmonic flow, makes the identification of these -- even when one knows what they are -- a rather difficult task.
Like most of Vidna Obmana's works in recent years, The River Of Appearance has been released by Projekt.

While Vidna Obmana's recent work has nowhere near approached the harsh, gritty textures of Arcane Device's work, the early Vidna Obmana was definitely rooted in a similar type of industrial noise.
It can be said that the Vidna Obmana atmospheres are this nebulous background, ranging from dark to light, becoming a constant backbone to each sector of this recording.
In all, Vidna Obmana and David Lee Myers have crafted a unique addition to both of their catalogs--spooky, subterranian, alien, vast, not to mention deliciously deep.

Obmana has chosen his collaborators wisely, especially his longtime musical partnership with Steve Roach.
Similarly, here with Pearce, Obmana must work within the sweet harmonies of the guitar, rather than depend on the gloomy atonal or microtonal tone-clusters that used to dominate his sound.

Whether or not Obmana opted to diversify his sound in Legacy, I know not as it is my first foray into this multi-instrumentalist's rather dark, hopeless world.
Problem is, and this could be reflective of my general lack of knowledge of ambient music, is that most of Obmana’s album, though interesting, though dark and capable of seeping into your sub-conscious and reveal itself within your dreams, just doesn’t know when it’s time to stop.
