History of the Eotheod, Page One
In 1248 of the Third Age, Vidugavia, King of Rhovanian fought with King Minalcar against the Easterlings in a battle that extended the power of the Kings as far east as the Sea of Rhûn.
After this battle, so great was the friendship of our two peoples that Rómendacil sent his son, Valacar, to Vidugavia's Court to learn of us and our ways.
It came to pass that Valacar and Vidumavi, daughter of Vindugavia, married and had a son who was called Vinitharya when young but grew and took the throne of Gondor as Eldacar in the year 1432.

How did Tolkien actually portray the Rohirrim?
The Kingdom of Rhovanion is attested from the middle of the 13th century in the Third Age (Vidugavia's time) until the middle of the 19th century.
It is perhaps significant that Tolkien used the Gothic language to provide names for Vidugavia (an Latinized form of widugauja, "wood-dweller"), his daughter (Vidumavi, Latinized from widumawi, "wood-maiden"), and her son, Vinitharya (later King Eldacar of Gondor).
Marhari, a descendant of Vidugavia (and probably the last king of Rhovanion), led the rearguard of the combined forces of Rhovanion and Gondor in the Battle of the Plains.

In the fourteenth century of the Third Age, King Rómendacil II of Gondor sent his son Valacar as an ambassador to Vidugavia, the so-called "King of Rhovanion".
Shortly after the death of Vidugavia a small group of Northmen moved to the vales of the Anduin between the Gladden Fields and the Mirkwood, probably to flee from the Wainriders, who had enslaved Rhovanion.
After the evil Kingdom of Angmar was defeated by Gondor and the remains of Arnor in 1977 T.A., these Northmen moved north and began to call themselves the Éothéod.
