Viedma is the capital city of the Argentine province of Río Negro and the Adolfo Alsina Department of that province.
With the Conquest of the Desert, the city became the capital of all Patagonia, and later, when it was divided in further smaller territories, the capital of the Río Negro Territory.
During the presidency of Raúl Alfonsín it was proposed to move the capital of Argentina from Buenos Aires to Viedma, but the idea did not prosper.

Viedma y Carmen de Patagones: dos ciudades separadas por las aguas del caudaloso río Negro y que curiosamente, aunque tienen una historia en común, cada una pertenece a una jurisdicción provincial diferente.
Allá por 1779 un español llamado Don Francisco de Viedma fundó un fuerte en la margen sur del río Negro que a los pocos meses debido a una crecida del río debió trasladarse a la orilla opuesta, donde surge Carmen de Patagones.
VIEDMA tiene hoy 47.000 habitantes y si hablamos de la “Comarca Viedma-Patagones”, estamos hablando de un núcleo poblacional de más de 70.000 habitantes.
