  Aunus expedition
The Aunus expedition was an attempt by Finnish volunteers to occupy parts of East Karelia in 1919, during the Russian Civil War.
Earlier attempts in 1918 to Petsamo and White Karelia (Viena expedition) had failed, partly due to a passive attitude of the Karelians.
The only result from the expedition was that the parish of Porajärvi declared on June 6 that it wished to join Finland.

The expedition was made up of two groups, one of which crossed the border at Kuusamo, but got bogged down in fighting the Red Guards.
The other group, which consisted of about 350 men, advanced as far as to Kem, or Vienan Kemi, on the White Sea coast, but was unable to occupy the town.
After the German defeat in World War I, the situation of the expedition deteriorated so much that they had to retreat back to Finnish territory.

When Lönnrot met Ontrei Malinen in the autumn of 1833, the latter was the most accomplished bard he had yet encountered.
It was from Ontrei that Lönnrot recorded the Sampo Episode, The Singing Match, Fishing for Vellamo's Fair Maiden, Väinämöinen and Antero Vipunen, The Rivals, The Sailing Expedition Against Pohjola and the Creation of the Kantele, Lemminkäinen's Tale and Väinämöinen's Judgement.

Particularly relevant for the Manteño expedition is the following excerpt from a report of an encounter, in 1525, between a large Manteño vessel and the Pizarro's first expedition to the West coast of South America:
First, the fact that the vessel had a crew of up to 20 men is very interesting, although this may be an estimate (the document only describes 11 Manteño leaping overboard in terror and three kept by the Pizarro expedition as translators).
With regards to the construction of the vessel, we have several details of interest: a capacity of 20+ tons, balsa log construction, a hull 'awash' in sea water while the crew and cargo are kept dry by a cane deck, the use of cotton sails.
