In 1999, a resident of Vieques asked (that is, petitioned) the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) to determine whether the Navy's operations on Vieques expose residents to unhealthy levels of environmental contaminants.
ATSDR concludes that the residents of Vieques are not being exposed to harmful levels of chemicals in the soil on Vieques.
Vieques soil is generally comparable to the soil across the United States, especially areas underlain by igneous or volcanic rocks.

The taxis at the airport and the tourist zones in San Juan are called Taxis Turisticos and their rates are fixed when traveling to/from the International Airport or the Piers in Old San Juan.
Unless the driver agrees to take you all the way to the airport or port (they are not supposed to do it) you will end at the Fajardo station where you will take another public car to the airport or ferry.

Sometimes in order to make convenient connections, or if flights from San Juan International to Vieques are full, you may have to take a taxi to the Isla Grande airport, which is about a 20 minute $16 taxi ride from San Juan International.
Note that there are only three ferries a day to Vieques and the last one leaves typically at 4.30 in the afternoon.
Also, if you have a lot of luggage this may be a better option since the small planes to Vieques generally have a 20 pound baggage limit (loosely applied, but they will charge you if the plane is full!) To find the Taxis, go to ground transportation at SJU and ask.

WASHINGTON -- The people of Vieques, Puerto Rico, will decide the fate of Navy and Marine Corps training on their island, President Clinton announced Feb. 1 in a videotaped address to the people of Puerto Rico.
Or they can vote to have the Navy continue training on Vieques on terms that would be presented at least three months before the vote.
Until the new fishing grounds are operational, registered commercial Vieques fishermen will be paid for each day they are unable to use existing waters because the Navy is training.
