Vierville   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-15)
The 5th Ranger Battalion, remnants of the 1st Battalion, 116th, and a few small elements of engineer units and of the 2d and 3d Battalions (a group from Company K arrived in the evening and was used for headquarters security) were holding defensive positions west and southwest of the village.
However, here and at the Vierville draw, long connecting tunnels, some of them going as far inland as the village, afforded a shelter for the enemy and made a quick clean-up of the fortifications impossible.
Nearby, the command group of the 2d Battalion had a handful of men from G and F; the rest of that battalion was scattered all the way from Colleville to Vierville, and a few troops were still held on the beach at les Moulins.

Saving Private Ryan: Company C, 2nd Ranger Battalion
The first was to follow Company A of the 116th in their attack on Vierville, and to pass through the village and attack a German strongpoint at Point et Raz de la Percee.
The second plan, should the attack on Vierville be unviable, was to climb cliffs at Charlie Sector and assault Point et Raz de la Percee with the assistance of DD Tanks and offshore naval units, after which they would join Task Force A on Pointe du Hoc.
Although their actions before reaching the Point were key to opening up the Vierville draw, Company C did not directly participate in the clearing of that exit.

The Image is a fl and white ‘abstract’ of the opening in the cliff at Omaho Beach known as the “Vierville Draw”...
The 29th Division’s objective was to secure the “Vierville Draw”, referred to as “Exit D-1” or “Dog One”, breach this German defense of the “Atlantic Wall” and capture the “Vierville Guns”.
The “Vierville Guns” were responsible for mowing down thousands of Allied Soldiers as they landed on the beach and tried to make their way to ‘cover’, several hundred feet from the surf, to start their assault as the “Battle of Normandy” commenced.

I'm stuck on the part where you have to use the church walls to defend yourself against the German counter attack.
If the tank always takes down your tank, then get your tank to fire on it (to keep it busy), then sneak up behind it and put a grenade in the hatch.
I just use my troops, send them to a covered area in the front of the Panzer, and use my tank to attack from the rear while I grenade the Panzer.

Tanknet > Did The Us Army "refuse" British Funnies?
Furthermore, the major obstacles at OMAHA were the two antitank walls at the Vierville and St Laurent draws, neither of which would have been susceptible to "machines" (the Vierville wall required the hand emplacement of 1,100 pounds of explosive by the 121st CIB to demolish it, followed by bulldozers to clear the debris).
At Vierville in contrast, the majority of the opposition was subdued by infantry attacking from the rear and right flank, over the bluffs.
They were effective against coastal gun positions, which was really their primary task, but that is a different kettle of fish since those perforce must have their embrasures exposed to seaward (for those that were protected by casemates, of course it was actually found that unprotected guns actually suffered less damage on the whole).

Their aim was to establish, on D Day, a beachhead three to four miles deep extending from the Drôme River to the vicinity of Isigny.
Elements of the 726th Infantry Regiment held the sector from Vierville to Grandcamp, in which, because of the continuous stretch of cliffs, coastal strongpoints were widely spaced.
He was still expecting the arrival of the 5th Rangers and 116th Infantry units along the Vierville road, carrying out the D-Day program, and this expectation had been strengthened when Colonel Rudder heard that Parker's platoon had actually arrived, reporting (erroneously) that the rest of the 5th Rangers were probably just behind them.
