The Geneva Convention divides the country of Viet Nam at the 17th Parallel into North and South Viet Nam with 20 July 1956 as the date for a unification election: a freely held election to determine who would rule a unified Viet Nam.
The vote, on 7 August, is 410 to 0 in the House of Representatives and 88 to 2 in the Senate--only Senators Ernest Grueing of Alaska and Wayne Morse of Oregon vote against the resolution.

Immediately notable, however, is that this newer comprehensive collection of imaginative representations of the Viet Nam war resides some 2000 miles east of CSU at La Salle University in Philadelphia.
For pedagogical purposes, the Imaginative Representations of the Viet Nam War provides hundreds of texts that would reveal to a student how--via comparative readings--a "non-fiction" narrative becomes eventually fictive (and vice versa) as the narrator refracts the recalled "event" through the lens of his imagination and his chimerical memory.
If one wishes to see how contemporary writers are "imagining" the consequences of the war on contemporary American society, or to study the treatment of the Viet Nam war as a long-term cultural determinant as presented in, say, 127 doctoral dissertations than--again--one must come to La Salle.

As they remark, "there can be no 'accurate' treatment of what Viet Nam means for American culture until these very teachers reconsider the material practices that have shaped curricula, instruction, and research projects in our universities for decades before and after the Vietnam War" (15).
