Vietnam Military Merit Medal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Created in 1950, the Military Merit Medal was modelled after the French Médaille militaire, and was the Vietnamese equivalent to the United States Medal of Honor and was authorized to those soldiers who had performed extreme acts of bravery or had given their lives in armed combat with enemy forces of Vietnam.
The United States military authorized the Vietnam Military Merit Medal as a foreign decoration and permitted the medal to be worn on U.S. uniforms.
The Vietnam Military Merit Medal was last issued to U.S. personnel in 1973 and was discontinued after the fall of South Vietnam in 1975.

Vietnam Meritorious Service Medal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Service versions of the Vietnam M.S.M. The Vietnam Meritorious Service Medal was a military decoration of South Vietnam which was issued between the years of 1950 and 1974.
The Vietnam Meritorious Service Medal was intended to recognize significant military achievement, both in combat and non-combat service, which surpassed the degree required for the Vietnam Gallantry Cross but did not warrant receipt of the higher decorations such as the National Order of Vietnam or the Vietnam Military Merit Medal.
The Vietnam Meritorious Service Medal was occasionally bestowed to foreign militaries, with several United States military members receiving the decoration during the years of the Vietnam War.

 Vietnam War
The Vietnam War was in many ways a direct successor to the French Indochina War, sometimes referred to as the First Indochina War, in which the French fought, with the financial and logistical support of the United States, to regain control of their former colony in Indochina.
Its military involvement increased over the years under three U.S. presidents, both Democrat and Republican (successively Eisenhower -R, Kennedy -D and Johnson -D, and was sustained for additional years in the administration of Richard Nixon -R), despite warnings by the US military leadership against a major ground war in Asia.
The unstated goal of Vietnamization was that the primary burden of combat would be returned to ARVN troops and thereby lessen domestic opposition to the war in the U.S. During this period, the United States conducted a gradual troop withdrawal from Vietnam.

The Purple Heart - Our First Military Medal
The practice of wearing medals was far too reminiscent of European aristocracy, and the people of the United States had taken great steps to build their nation far from the European model.
But the certificate of merit was just that, a certificate that existed more in terms of a voucher that often brought a small payment to the soldier but no lasting recognition or visible medal.
(Vietnam War Medal of Honor recipient Robert Howard was wounded 14 times in 54 months of combat duty, for a total of 9 awards of the Purple Heart.) As with other military awards, subsequent awards of the Purple Heart are designated by the addition of one oak leaf cluster for each additional award.
