Vietnam Campaign Medal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The decoration was intended to be a service medal of the Vietnam War and was the most commonly bestowed foreign military award to the United States military prior to the Gulf War.
In such cases, a service member must have been awarded either the Vietnam Service Medal or the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (for service in a Vietnam campaign) to be eligible for the Vietnam Campaign Medal.
The Vietnam Campaign Medal is considered a foreign award by the U.S. government, with the U.S. equivalent award known as the Vietnam Service Medal.

Vietnam Service Medal - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The medal is issued to recognize military service during the Vietnam War and is authorized to service members in every branch of the U.S. Armed Forces.
The Vietnam Service Medal (VSM) is retroactive to 1961 and supersedes and replaces the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (AFEM) which was issued for Vietnam service prior to 1965.
Veterans of the Vietnam War may exchange the AFEM for the VSM and have military records updated to reflect the difference by contacting the National Personnel Records Center, which is the current agency that provides record corrections reflecting an AFEM upgrade to the Vietnam Service Medal.

The unstated goal of Vietnamization was that the primary burden of combat would be returned to ARVN troops and thereby lessen domestic opposition to the war in the U.S. During this period, the United States conducted a gradual troop withdrawal from Vietnam.
Service in the war, though initially unpopular, soon became respected even though the war itself was not (many of the war's veterans, however, have experienced profound difficulties - including homelessness - since returning from Vietnam).
Past service in Vietnam became important to the election of many future American politicians; for example, it was a factor in the election of John McCain, a former Vietnam POW, to the US Senate.
