Vietnam War - Iridis Encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The Vietnam War was in many ways a direct successor to the First Indochina War, (or French Indochina War) in which the French, with the financial and logistical support of the United States, fought to regain control of their former colony in Indochina.
Service in the war, though initially unpopular, soon became respected even though the war itself was not (many of the war's veterans, however, have experienced profound difficulties - including homelessness - since returning from Vietnam).
Past service in Vietnam became important to the election of many future American politicians; for example, it was a factor in the election of John McCain, a former Vietnam POW, to the US Senate.

 USN Service Medal Index
merican bluejackets and Marines were without official medals or other visible signs of their overseas service or combat for the first 120 years of the Navy's existence, since orders, medals and decorations were seen as the trappings of royalty and empire and ran contrary to the republican spirit present at the founding of our country.
On rare occasions, Congress authorized special commemorative medals for heroes of dramatic naval victories, but these went chiefly to the vessels' commanding officer and were not medals intended for wear on the naval uniform.
Foreign service medals issued to U.S. forces typically are not featured separately, although they may be illustrated and identified alongside their parallel U.S. award.

But for the second straight day, it was what Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran turned antiwar activist, and Bush, a pilot in the National Guard, did three decades ago that was attracting much of the campaign heat.
Kerry’s campaign issued a statement accusing the president of receiving special treatment during his service in the Guard and of failing to prove he showed up for duty during part of his service.
The statement also pointed to what it said were gaps in the records regarding Bush’s service in the Guard during 1972 and 1973.
