		on the 15th April, 1763, the first sugar establishment in St.Lucia was commenced in the quarter of Vieux Fort under the auspices of Messer.
		One may judge of the importance of the Vieux Fort district in the early French Colonial days by the fact that it had a resident priest from 1749 onwards.
		In fact from 1750 onwards, Vieux Fort was one of the three main districts of St. Lucia.

		The site where the "Vieux fort" was built has given rise to a controversy amongst the few historians who have expressed an opinion on the subject.
		So it is our belief that the "vieux fort" was on the plateau to the north-east of Placentia, that it dates back to a time prior to 1662, and that it was then perhaps reinforced by a battery on the south point of the gut.
		The only reference to the fort in our possession is the very brief mention of it in Du Perron's letter which tells of a "grande loge de pieux couverte de terre, qui est autant comme rien." At that time there were four cannons in the fort.

	Three More New Schools for Castries and Vieux Fort
		According to Prime Minister Dr Kenny D. Anthony, the project will see the construction of a new primary school at Union to accommodate some 1,050 students, while the second will be the construction of a new technical vocational institute at Ciceron to accommodate some 525 students.
		The Prime Minister, who is also Finance Minister, said the third project will involve expansion of existing facilities at the Vieux Fort Senior Primary School to accommodate some 175 students.
		According to Dr Anthony: "The objective is to increase access, quality and efficiency of primary education in Castries; and of senior primary education in both Castries and Vieux Fort."
