Gamerz Edge Viewtiful Joe from Capcom   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Joe has a “VFX Meter” at the top of the screen that will deplete steadily any time a VFX power is used (until the player turns the VFX power off, in which case it will begin to slowly replenish itself).
Viewtiful Joe is strictly for people who are determined to complete the game, against all odds, and reap the sense of triumph that follows.
Viewtiful Joe might have some of the most critically acclaimed gameplay of any game this generation, but its graphics are no afterthought, either.

There's a part where Joe has a remote to control a rocketing platform that emits a constant, incessant "beep beep beep," and a mid-boss fight against a UFO set against the constant ringing of a loud, obnoxious bell that won't go silent until the aircraft is felled.

Viewtiful Joe 2 (cube: 2004): Reviews
With all of the additions Viewtiful Joe 2 introduces, the game is still very similar to the first game, right down to a final showdown prefixed with having to fight all of the previously defeated bosses.
Viewtiful Joe 2 is as big a triumph as the original, resisting the urge to change a winning formula but building on it with even cooler settings, funnier bosses, more variety in the gameplay and a cool new way to manipulate time.
There's not much to differentiate Viewtiful Joe 2 from the first, as new VFX power and the ability to switch characters mid-level are the only major gameplay changes.

Retro beat 'em-up Viewtiful Joe is the first to pack its bags, bringing its inimitable style intact to the PS2 along with some worthwhile extras that weren't included in the Gamecube original.
This is aided in no small part by Joe, a brash and self-aware amalgamation of Japanese superhero clichés who is an ideal (and endearing) main character for some seriously light-hearted fun.

While their primary application is combat-oriented, the rules that govern Joe's powers extend to the entire gameworld, and it is around this concept that Itsushi Inaba and his team have crafted some truly entertaining puzzles and scenarios.
With Viewtiful Joe, Capcom have created a stark, comic-book inspired world: Characters have a rough, stylized look to them, akin to that of an artist's rough sketch, while backgrounds appear at times almost flat, lending credence to the fact that the action takes place on a movie screen.
The various VFX powers Joe employs come replete with visual effects such as blur lines and ghost images -- though its simple presentation belies it, Viewtiful Joe is in fact a treat for the eyes.

"Viewtiful Joe"/ a game review from Christian Spotlight
Thus begins Vietiful Joe, with an opening cutscene of Joe and his girlfriend Sulvia watching an oldtime hero movie about "Captain Blue." Sylvia isn't very interesting in the movie, just making out with Joe (a small part of the objectionable content, as Sylvia seems to have more on her mind that just kissing).
Joe however has been looking forward to this movie for a very long time.
In these lessons Joe learns the basics of combat (punch, kick) and in later lessons, the advanced Viewtiful Effects (VFX) which are critical to the game.

If the gauge is depleted (don’t worry it replenishes once your finger is off the trigger) then Joe transforms into his normal clothes and the visuals mimic an old and cracked-up reel of film.
But it’s not these visuals that will be the defining memories of Viewtiful Joe, once you turn on a special attack you’re in a different world.

October 3, 2003 - Remember when you first heard the word "viewtiful?" It was actually only one year ago that Capcom dropped that little wacky adjective on the world as it unearthed plans for the "Fantastic Five" -- a stunning five-title line-up set to sail exclusively on Nintendo's GameCube.
Yes, we realize that Joe is a spandex-clad superhero with a pink cape, but if you haven't already fallen in love with this game for yourselves after consuming our extensive, viewtiful preview coverage, then please, read on and allow us to share our passion.
Though the story is straightforward, all we need to know is that Joe's girlfriend Silvia has been mysteriously sucked into a movie by an evil force to provide us with more than enough motivation to hop into the red tights and commence with the beatdown.
