The Saab Viggen (Thunderbolt¹) or Saab 37 is a Swedish fighter aircraft manufactured between 1970 and 1990 to replace the Saab Draken (Dragon).
Canards have since become common in fighter aircraft, notably with the Eurofighter Typhoon and the IAI Kfir.) As both the wing and the forward canard provided lift, the Viggen may be considered a modern biplane.

The Saab 9-3 Viggen sports tourer is a new high performance variant of the Saab 9-3, developed to appeal to a small group of enthusiast drivers seeking enhanced driving characteristics and individual design above the offerings in the overall Saab 9-3 model range.
The delta shaped Saab 9-3 Viggen symbol on the car's front wings is reminiscent of the 'double v' shape formed by the wings of the Viggen jet fighter.

 CanadianDriver: 2000 Saab 9-3 Viggen
The Viggen's performance tuning is by TWR (Tom Walkinshaw Racing), a British specialty company that 'tunes' cars for a number of major manufacturers including Saab and Volvo.
The Viggen's ride is smooth, quiet and well-damped on even pavement, but feels a bit stiff over bumpy surfaces, in part because of its low-profile 17 inch tires.
The Viggen seats five passengers and has plenty of headroom and legroom, but access to the rear seat is hampered by a front passenger seat that does not slide forwards automatically when the seatback is folded.

Saab's 9-3 Viggen, the most powerful and unique of all their models, is not for the faint of heart.
Viggen's torque, at 258 foot pounds from 2500 rpm through 4500 rpm, gives the talented and experienced driver a nice feeling of control, even at high speeds on wet surfaces in this near-3100 pound auto.
Viggen was built with consultant input from the British TWR Group (Tom Walkinshaw Racing), a company involved for decades in designing high-performance road cars and race cars for manufacturers around the world.

 The SAAB 37 Viggen
The Viggen does have a ram-air turbine for emergency flight power, fitted to a door under the trailing edge of the left canard that pops out when hydraulic power is lost and (for some puzzling reason) when the landing gear is extended.
The Viggen was originally fitted with a SAAB "Mark 2" rocket-boosted ejection seat with zero-altitude capability, but as demonstrated by the accident that killed Lennart Fryoe, the aircraft had to be moving 75 KPH (47 MPH) or more for the seat to work reliably.
About 100 Viggens had been scrapped by 2000, and the type is currently expected to be retired by 2006, but as mentioned the Swedes really like to get their money's worth out of their aircraft, and the Viggen's predecessors had long service lives.

A huge amount of time went into making the Viggen as good as it could be given its slightly questionable chassis underpinnings and just before its release, rumors of the Viggen being a 270 Bhp monster leaked out, perhaps totally fiction, but a wonderful concept none the less.
To sum the Viggen up, it is a fine car for the most part, however the slight shortcomings in the development of the chassis put potential customers off, who presumably went on to purchase similar rival models, such as the BMW M3, Audi S6 and AMG Mercedes models.
Despite the Viggen being removed from European SAAB showrooms, it will continue to sell in the United States until 2002, when finally the Viggen will be removed from the model line up, and will slip into SAAB's history - hopefully to be remembered by those who own and drive them as an enjoyable drivers car.
